IMHO, the only things in magic worth any significant financial outlay are good books and historical memorabilia - i.e. rare items. As someone said in a magic store to me yesterday: "If anyone actually learnt and perfected everything in Expert Card Technique, they'd be a fantastic magician beating the hell out of most of them out there". And that's only a few bucks

Buy stock in Enron...oh, I guess I'm the only one that did that.
I don't know what your skill level and particular interests are (cards, coins), etc., but if you want to perform "unique close-up magic," spend the money on developing a unique performing persona instead of on "unique" props, i.e., those that nobody else owns. Sounds like a visit to Dr. Fitch is in order. |

Honestly, I would spend more $1000 (total of $6000) and buy an origami. ))

If you spend 5000 on magic, why not invest it in an antique magic prop from one of the greats! Probably end up spending more than 5000 tho.
With this kind of money, don't spend it all on magic, buy a series of books and work on these effects until you feel you have covered everything. You don't really want a magic overload...

If you buy 5K worth of magic, you will waste about 4.5K. There is no way you will be able to learn/remember that much. I bought some Mallone, Sankey, and Ammar DVD's and have not even scratched the surface of what is contained in them.

I have to agree that plopping down $5000 for a pile of magic will give yopu lots of candidates for the FOR SALE pile later. I would reccommend getting a few items you've wanted as well as a few books, dvd etc and put the rest on the shlef until you build up a new wish list from what you already have. If you spend it all now, within a few months you'll be kicking yourself over something you want but didn't buy. I don't think anyone will give better advice than this.
Bottom Line: Don't spend it all in the same trip unless you are sure of what you will use.

It is very easy to go through $5,000.
Before you spend it, ask yourself what do you want to do with the closeup stuff? Entertain in restaurants? Strolling magician? Etc. Knowing what you're going to do with what you want needs to be determined first. If unsure then get a VH/DVD of each feild and then make so hard choices. Give yourself some direction.

magicball,
There are some very nice silver cups for the cups and balls available. That might be a very wise investment. Buy two sets just in case. Also, about the right price to get an advance edition of my 'book'. There won't be many copies though the material is not for beginners. - not entirely kidding -Jonathan PS You might want to check out the upcomming "Ramsay" issue of Genii.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for all your advice and recommendations. I've decided to use 1/4 ($2500) to upgrade my props and buy some DVDs first. I wish to upgrade my close up table. I've found two models on the market, they are Mikame from Japan, and the one from Collector's Workshop. Any suggestions? Thanks |

This is exactly what I'd do with that type of money. I'd watch out for master classes from guys like McBride and others. Don't let the name fool you - - it's not just for pros or advanced cardmen.
This is what I'd do if I were you, and you'd see me on the next flight to Vegas also. |

Set aside the money for a Kohler Holdout and U3F !!!!!
They are definitely worth the money, especially if you have so much to spend. |

Most magicians are constantly looking outside of themselves (looking for the greatest magic effect on the market) instead of looking inside of themselves (looking at ways they can become a better performer). If you don't believe me, look at the number of "hits" on this entire forum, "The good, the bad, and the garbage," to see how many magicians are interested in the next best thing. Props will always come and go, but you will always be you. Ask a famous magician you respect what he/she considers his/her best investment in magic, and I'll bet you get an answer other than a specific magic prop, e.g., books on theory, acting lessons, or something similar which helped the magician develop as a performer. Alternatively, if you decide to invest only in props, let me know when they become shelf liner and I'll gladly pay you $.10 on the dollar. |

First, get a nice shelf to store and display your future magic props, then get a nice performance table. These two will cost you some money and which are need in future. Then get some effects little by little each month.
After two years, you will find they all occupied your shelves!
Most memorable moment - with Maestro Juan Tamariz & Consuelo Lorgia in FISM Busan 2018.

I would buy collectible stuff from Owen's Magic, Wolf's Magic, Alan Warner, Todd Lassen, and Viking. You will peel through $10,000 no problemo...(I did).
At least you will always have something unique and invested. |

Just a note again about those cups for cups and balls. There will be few sets and if you like the ones Vernon used you might want to get a set while they can be bought from the manufacturer.
Some things don't come around very often. If you are truly a holdout user or wannabe, the Kohler thing should be special too.
