"Being forced to read every word for this project was revelatory for Malone -- it was like student and mentor were once again side by side."

Malon can read now?

I still remember the words of Jim Ryan concerning Marlo said at FFFF in the late 1970's. "I don't understand why with all the talent in Chicago, you guys cannot teach Marlo to be ertertaining". They could do it. But Bill Malone is Marlo with Entertainment!

Marlo was entertaining...with a dry wit. Malone is Marlo...puking cards.

Steve,
I will take your words for it. I only know what Jim said and others as I never saw Marlo work.

What Jim and the other workers said was true. Heba would joke about the "name" magicians and the "card guys" coming into the NYL. He'd kind of mime the guy staring at his own hands and cards fluttering about constantly puffing at a cigarette. He'd play the followers standing on their chairs or laying at his feet watching and gasping. Then he'd play the part of the layman with his head drooping down "zzzzzzzz".
It wasn't just Marlo though and I'll bet it still holds true for many today.

Have fun!

I take guys never saw him work the crowd at Treasure Chest or at the Magic Bar years ago. Marlo could be quite entertaining.
