This is disturbing on several levels. Here's a senator who wants to 'focus on technology' and 'move forward into the future' by mining uranium in Arizona. She also believes the earth is 6000 years old. Perhaps she'd be surprised to learn that the half-life of the element she's so keen on is around 4.5 billion years, but somehow I don't think it would change her opinion. Who said anything about christians? I'm sure there are Jews and Muslims that believe the world is only 6000 or so years old as well.

Well, I guess we don't REALLY, because it's "around" 4.5 billion, so you have to even qualify the rounding. But it's pretty close to within a hundred million years.

On a side note, there is a theory proposed by Intelligent Design proponents that explains how an element with a half-life of 4.5 billion years can be only 6000 years old, and also explains the flaws in radiocarbon dating. I think it goes something like this: atomic decay used to be really, really fast, but slowed down dramatically. So when the earth was created 6000 years ago, it was bathed in lethal radiation. This must have been pretty devastating to ancient Egyptian culture, of course- especially since according to the earliest recorded date on their calendar, they'd been around for at least 250 years already (earliest recorded date, 4241 B.C.) They were probably just floating on their pyramid spaceships, and landed after all the radioactivity died down. I must say the amount of mental and scientific gymnastics needed to explain how evidence of a 4.5 billion year old earth actually proves it's only 6000 years old is rather staggering. Or I guess one could just ignore scientific evidence and come to the same conclusion.
