This is available from the creator at:
http://www.steelballmagic.com/ This is the best thing I've seen in a very long time. Lou Serrano's routine has impressed and badly fooled many a knowledgeable magician. Not that I'm in that category (as a knowledgeable magician), but it did fool the living snot out of me. After watching his DVD I've learned Lou is a talented and polished performer. I enjoyed watching his performances on the DVD immensely. He tips his routine completely. The instructions are first-rate. He includes everything you really need to replicate the routine, in the package. Oh he doesn't include the practice, charisma and performing persona. I know I looked all through the box he sent me. I guess I was supposed to supply that myself. You do have to build a little box out of cardboard. (Took me exactly seven minutes.) You'll have to have some other stuff I know you have laying about in your home. The directions on the DVD were more than ample to truly put the whole package together very, very quickly. Go to his website, it lists all the cool extras that come with the package. I don't want to steal his thunder. He obviously put a lot of thought and marketing into the construction of the website. The price is clearly stated on his website. It's not the cheapest magic DVD and props you'll ever buy. It is definitely not a one-trick deal. The extras he includes really and truly add to the overall value. I think if you want to learn a great stand-up routine that, for me, eclipses anything of it's ilk, you'll spend the dough. This is not cheap, but oh so worth it. Plus you get to play with Lou's . . . handling of a great effect. If I had a rating system this would top it. KG |

Kent..
I don't have the package, but have been fortunate to witness Lou's performance of the routine many times at the Castle. It killed every time, in front of magicians and lay people. It's definitely on my list to buy this year! Great stuff!!! Ken |

Completely agree with everything you've said Kent, but would prefer this thread to be deleted, for obvious reasons. No need to have more magi than necessary doing this one.

I just received this a couple of days ago and have completed constructing the box and adapting some of the gimmicks to fit my style and needs. I've demonstrated this routine to two fairly critical parties (my wife being one), and gotten excellent responses. I've decided to say that the steel balls are ball bearings from a time machine Thomas Edison was working on before he died... Anyway, this is easy to perform and highly adaptable. Worth every penny even if the DVD didn't contain half a dozen killer tricks. Steel balls and Lou rule.

This really does look amazing.
Can anyone speak to the construction of the box? Is that anything complicated?

The box is nothing, it is not gimmicked, it is a piece of cardboard folded to a dimension to fit snugly aroung the 3 balls and covered with wrapping paper. Many on the forum are talking about constructing more elaborate looking boxes but that is for personal preference aor appearance.

So glad to see this review Kent. I've been thinking about this for a while and an insightful review from a friend I trust is very welcomed.

Is it a knuckle buster, or just basic skills and practice required.

I just got this a couple of days ago. It is not a knuckle buster. I'm very satisfied with the product, especially the steel ball routine itself. I'm also looking forward to the additional dvd with alternate handlings which is apparently going to be sent to buyers soon. Highly recommended.

So, it's a lot of practice or are they sponge balls?

The ad copy says it will take time and practice but within the grasp of any intermediate magician. There is something quite wonderfully magic about the ball bearings disappearing. The sleights look within reach, its Lou's routineing and timing that will take the most practice to make it look like he does. What is it about steel balls that I love?

I bought this and think that in Lou's hands it is very magical! Like a few effects, I have trouble because I am left handed. It's not that I can't learn to do the moves right handed, but it isn't natural to me. I also understood that I had to wear a jacket, but didn't realize that the jacket had to be modified. I'm still on the fence as to whether this is right for me. I will say though that Lou gives you more than your money's worth, and his money back guarantee is bullet proof. For me it still comes down to "Will I ever perform "The Steel Balls" routine with moves that are foreign to me? Make sure you understand, the moves aren't difficult, just tougher for a lefty. Soon he will be sending a suplimental DVD with alternative handlings. Maybe there will be something that works for me! I will keep you posted.

I think it's a very nice routine but, admittedly, I didn't like having to modify a jacket and, frankly, won't bother to do so. The effect is certainly simple enough that other handlings can be worked out but, of course, that's not what anyone really expects to do when buying a professional, tested routine.
I'm probably in the minority here, but the reappearance of the balls in the box didn't even remotely fool me when I watched the performance (before watching the explanations,) and I had never seen the routine before this first viewing. Despite some misdirection, it was pretty obvious what was done and looked kind of strange, at least to me. Perhaps it's more effective in person rather than on video. Please don't misunderstand, I think it's a very nice routine, but one that I'll never do and I bought it with the hope of actually adding another routine to my work. He does, as has been mentioned, offer a full money-back no questions asked guarantee, very reminiscent of Ken Brooke, and I'll probably take him up on it. |

Glad I passed on this one. I would never modify a jacket either and I think it should be stated as such. Great money back offer I suppose but why the hassle.

All I did was safety pin a couple of special somethings into my jacket. There is a major alteration which you can skip by changing things up a bit. Nuff said...

Making an alteration to a piece of clothing seems rather minor for a professional routine, but just my opinion.
