So I bought some second hand Bazar De Magia copper cups which arrived this morning...
Opened them to find that they were all in grotty condition but one looked like someone had tried to do some kind of chemical patina on it. It was in a mess.... So I followed Bill Palmer's advice in another thread and decided that if I was going to do it then I might as well film the process so other people could benefit from it... Thanks Bill, it worked beautifully... http://www.cupsandballsmagic.com/Cup-Care.html (Warning, I am no Speilberg!) |

Excellent job, Brian! I just wish I could have seen the look on your face when you applied the vinegar and salt solution to that first cup. The difference in the finish, of course, was startling.
The salt and vinegar solution removes such a small amount of copper that it would have to be measured in milligrams to get the weight and microns to get the depth. Thanks for the great demo, and thanks for the kind words. BTW, you probably could have used about half that amount of salt, but it's really not a problem. Also, when using spirits, make sure there is plenty of ventilation. When you clean the cups with vinegar and salt, the rinsing must be very thorough. You don't want to leave any acid inside the mouth bead. Great work!!!!

Awesome video, Bri. That will be a very helpful resource for people in the future.
When I did my treatment I wore nitrile gloves while degreasing just in case more grease from my hands was transferred. My cups looked very similar to your worst one, like old rotten teeth. It's good to have a healthy alternative to breathing in noxious fumes in order to clean your cups. |

Bill, it was a pleasure, thanks for all the great advice. I worked like real magic!
Ethan Thanks, that first cup had something that had run down it and set, I believe someone had tried a chemical patina on it, which ledas me to believe that I really should have worn gloves (and as Billsaid) been well ventilated too.. Bri |
