I'm posting this here as well as a few other areas to spread the word about Departure Ring Flight. Consider this my Public Service Announcement and or WARNING to all the working Pro's out there.
I have gone thru SIX (6) Departures in less then a year's time. They do not hold up. If you're a working professional using this night after night after night as I do, then it will not hold up. I guarentee you that! Departure is a great little prop and is the strongest Ring Flight I've ever used but they just don't last. If you're a "weekend warrior" or a "hobbiest" then I would say you'll be fine. BUT A NOTE TO ALL THE WORKING PRO'S OUT THERE! This thing will FAIL YOU. I play 5 nights a week between 3 different restaurants along with about 8+ strolling gigs per month. Departure gets a workout from me. STAY FAR AWAY! I hear there is a NEW Ring Flight on the Market that I'm now going to try out. I forget the name, but it comes with a 1 year guarentee I think I heard. I could be wrong. At any rate, Departure SUCKS! DO NOT WASTE YOU MONEY!!!!!!!

James Prince on his Menu OF Miracles volume 3 has a wonderful version called Ready Teddy Go!
"A finger ring is borrowed from a spectator. Suddenly the ring vanishes from the magicians hands. It's found attached to a cute little teddy bear key ring. So what's new - check this out: The Spectator removes the key ring from your pocket The Spectator can freely handle the bear The Spectator can remove their ring from the clip". James is a restaurant worker and uses this to gerat success.

I have never had a problem. I have even dropped my keys a couple times on concrete and it has held up without issue. Sorry for your misfortune, I strongly enjoy my Departure.

Yes Brain, but how often do you use it?
For me, I perform it approximately 5-8 times per night on Monday and on Wednesday's (2 hour shift each night) and I perform it at least 50 times per weekend at Crystals since I'm putting in about 30 hours there. That's almost 70 times per week I use Departure + my corporate walk around gigs. Does your Departure get the same workout? If it does great...but I'd have a back up one for when it breaks (and it will I assure you).

No, I do not use my departure that much. Perhaps I use it only 20 times in a week during gigs. Still, sorry for your bad luck.

Nods!
That's why I was saying that if you don't use it that often, then it will likely hold up for a while. But to anyone who uses this thing as a staple, then it's going to crap out on you. This last one held out for a mere 3 weeks before snapping. $%&*$@#*@!!~!!!~~~!!!!!!!!

My first one snapped the first day I had it. Hocus-pocus was great and immediately sent me another. Now, I do not use it as much as Chris does, but I think a lot of gimmicks of this nature are bound to have a "use-life" or a shelf life. I don't have any other RFs to compare durability to, but I know that eventually all of my mechanical props are going to need replacing, ITR's etc...
That being said, six in less than a year does seem very excessive, no matter how much you are using them!! ... and considering my first broke in one day, I'm wondering if there is inconsistency in the quality of their manufacturing. Sander's Interlaced might be an option for a similar effect with a gimmick that won't wear out over time. It's not as handy to carry around, but could be an option.

OK Lyle, here ya go. You want the BEST ring flight prop out there today? Just a ring/key from Joe Porper. NO REEL! I have done this with a Super Bowl ring, (you'll have to order a bigger clip from Joe.) This is no fail, the safest way to do this kind of effect. The keycase can be on the table while the ring vanishes, or even held by a spectator. When I'm working strolling and there is no table, I often lean forward and put it in a spectators outer coat or shirt pocket. This is the one you want, I wouldn't B.S. you. Kavanaugh, yeah, I'd B.S. that guy all day. PM me if you want more info on it.

I'm very gullible, so it wouldn't be much effort!

PEPSTER... he said he had one and didn't like it.
SUGGESTION: My pal, trade show superstar Jerry Newton uses an old ring flight and he has about six of them and rotates 'em in and out so no 'one' unit gets over used.

Pete/Pepka,
Yeah...the Porper one wasn't for me. I just really like the fairness of using the reel versions...however, they all break rather quickly. I'm gonna hold off on Ring Flight for a while I think and focus on working some new bits I've been doing into the act. I may buy the new one that's being made (Revolution I think it's called) after a while. For now, I'm done with it...(darn it!)

The olde original effect was with a H U G E reel. I have 3 or 4 of these and you could pull a dog on one. The cord was heavy fishing line. The effect was simple You showed a borrowed ring in your left hand. Your right hand was in your pocket. The ring vanished off your left index finger and almost immediately you brought your right hand out of your pocket and the ring was on your right index finger.
It was called "They Flying Ring" and I believe the first makers were in Germany. Koran decided it would be better for his act to have the ring appear on his key case and marketed the original. Since there DOZENS if not hundreds of variations have evolved. Fred Kaps was the first I know of that duplicated Koran's effect WITHOUT a reel. He fooled a lot of knowledgable magicians with his way.

What's breaking on them? The spring?
If so, heat up the end with a flame before you re-wind it. Heat it till it turns blue a good inch or so at the end. Have fun! Terry V.

I've been using the same ring flight for nearly seven years now, and I use it extensively. It's a rock. High quality leather, strong locking reel with enough line. When it broke on me (two times, once because I changed the clip and didn't tie it off very well, and once the thread got a tangle in the reel) both times I was able to fix it in a few minutes.
Departure's line was too short and it failed after a few weeks (broken), and I couldn't get in to fix it. It's an old-style zippered key case which suits me just fine. I can't remember which particular version it was, but I think I'll hang on to my money before I try out a new ring flight anytime soon. |

Use fishermens knots as though you were securing a hook to line.

Carucci,
Those old leather key cases work very well and never once did I ever have an issue with them...except for one thing. WHO ON EARTH TODAY (at least in the USA) CARRIES A LEATHER KEY CASE???? They're out of place, not current, and therefore no longer relevent to use. I liked Rinkey Dinkey first b/c it was a KEY that would go on YOUR key chain. I went thru about 3 of those in a 6 month time. Then I went to Departure. You know the story with that (see above). Terry... The thing is, you CANNOT get into the reel. The reel is built into a car remote and it's seeled shut. You would have to break the remote to get into it. Same with Rinkey Dinkey (car key). What's happening is the line breaks and retracts back into the remote or key (depending on which one you have). I will try Revolution. Christopher P.S. Pete/Pepka...don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that Porper's Ring Flight isn't great b/c it is...just doesn't work for me. = )

I agree, you certainly don't see many key cases in the US (I've been back in the US for 3 1/2 years now and I've seen two)
It seems to work for me. I also have what Paul Harris would refer to as a pup-tent wallet. I also have a non-Kaps wallet of the same size. I tend to be more European in my dress and demeanor. Oxford shoes, 3-button suit, windsor knot, pocket square etc. Nobody has ever questioned it (or even looked at it cockeyed), but everyone has been amazed. The problem is, it doesn't work for everyone. To take an extreme example; put the same ring flight in a hip 'street magic' kid, for example, and it would look ridiculous. |
