Well as long as we can all agree that everyone else is wrong.
This is the sort of thing that brings us all together.

Sorry Jonathan, I enjoy discussing things like this, but I'm not at your level of intellect. Too often I just don't understand what you're saying.
If I was a little brighter, I probably would give you more of a response. Two closing thoughts (not directed at you): People who mock differing opinions have no ability to learn anything new, because they're so entrenched in the belief that they're right, that their mind is closed. They're essentially stuck where they're at. There is a definite advantage to being open-minded. A film described as "hateful, bigoted, demeaning, and stupid" (for Borat, I'm sure Bruno's no different) is having an effect on people, whether they realize it or not. If a person doesn't feel it contains those elements, that shows how little inputs over time can have a drastic difference in attitude. And it can effect all aspects of your life - not just moral (which many people think is of no consideration). Will some people be entertained by it? Of course. But they're getting more than entertainment. In general it seems that if it's even acknowledged that there is an effect from these inputs, the effect is considered minute - of no consequence. I'm just saying that everything has a consequence, and that these consequences are a lot bigger than any of us realize. |

A friend whose general taste in movies differs considerably from mine talked me into going to see Borat (mainly because part of it was shot nearby). From the outset, it was hateful, bigoted, demeaning, stupid, and entirely unfunny! You missed the point of the film. I saw Bruno last night. It wasn't as funny as Borat, but it was still pretty hilarious in places. I particularly enjoyed the section in the middle east where he confuses Hamas with Humous, also "Looking up at the stars at night always makes me imagine all the hot guys around the world.". I would be recommending the movie had I not just seen the review that Carrie Sue linked to. I think it would be DANGEROUS to see it, so much as I enjoyed elements of it, I can't endorse it. A couple of extracts from the review: Quote:
The movie ends with Snoop Dogg, the rap celebrity, saying a line with the politically correct, anti-Christian, unbiblical, and wicked message that homosexuality is really no big deal. Recognize

A quick comment pertaining only to the points I was trying to make: The point of the film has nothing to do with it.

What was the "point" of the film, then?

"And, it is Christianity and the Word of God, the Bible, that are still the standard bearers when it comes to morality, especially sexual morality and the morality that protects children ...."
And nothing but nothing that Baron Cohen could write could ever be as funny (or as sad) as that quote. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8059826.stm (Taking Cohiba's point it is perfectly obvious that these brothers and nuns have just fallen foul , as we all would, to many years of moral diminishment by watching dreadful films and reading pornography). The positive thing that this film does is shone a light on areas that people might not want to face into. And for all their talk of virtue and morality that is one thing that would scare the living hell out some organised religions. |

I am now so torn.
I always pay careful attention to Carrie's advice. I recently read a book I would never have experienced but for Carrie's admonition that all should avoid it's Satanic content. So when Carrie recommends avoiding Bruno I feel compelled to see it. However I am with Doug and the others who are uncomfortable watching people being punked. Sometimes it's a little amusing, but I can't help but see it as an invasion of people's privacy - to my mind only justified when people's criminally evil actions or intent are being exposed. I don't think it's warranted when the intent is merely to mock people holding opinions no longer in vogue or prejudices no longer accepted by normal rational people. As far as the homosexual content of the movie, I cannot suppress an evil chuckle that the segment of society whose organisations tyranised homosexuals for most of the last 2,000 years now feel able to cry indignant tears that we and our friends are able to persecute them with mockery. Poor little dears. |

Hate is stupid.
I think it's just as stupid when people think it's okay to hate white American heterosexuals because, as you know, we're all the devil. Stupid bunch of crap. There are j-holes in every race, creed, and sexual orientation. Good folks too. Political Correctness is it's own form of rascism.

Bigotry, the word you are looking for is "bigotry"
Political correctness is due at times to bigotry. Racism is a type of bigotry. However, not being unnecessarily offensive can also be considered polite, not particularly bigoted.

Well, I don't want to get any more soapboxey than I already have, but "Equality for all!"
PC, though, is not polite. It is a condescending and fake politeness. It is fear based affectation. The reason I was thinking rascism in relation to PC has to do with the term "Native American." A term invented by a select few scared white people and resented by many American Indians. But you're right, it expands beyond mere rascism into total bigotry. I am not white. I am melungeon. We don't even warrant our own race category on a job application. It's just my opinion, but I don't think we can achieve true equality until we confront each others cultural differences and then respect them.

Anyone here ever see the movie Party Monster with Seth Green and Macaulay Caulkin? I just saw that movie this past weekend. I thought it was quite good, although the New York scene it portrayed seems just so bizarre.
The main characters in that movie are about as over the top gay as Bruno is. But something that just clicked in my mind is that one of the real life people the movie is based on (a real life murderer, presently imprisoned) is Michael Alig. 'Alig' as in 'Ali G' but with no space. Coincidence? Or is this why Sacha Baron Cohen (consciously or subconsciously) selected this character's name? To pay sort of an homage to Alig or to make some other point (maybe just an inside joke). I assume Sacha Cohen Baron was familiar with Michael Alig's story (I can think of a great many reasons why he would / should have been).
