Hello Magic Café!
I would like to describe for you an effect I have been working on and I am quite pleased to post it here today. Any feedback on what you think of this effect would be extremely appreciated since I have been working so very hard in making this effect practical and workable. So first I shall describe the effect to all of you and then some background. Effect: The magician patters about the powers of the mind and such while running through the cards with faces towards him/herself. Then the magician decides on one card and places it face-down on the table taking extra care no one sees what it is. The rest of the deck is carefully put back it the box and put completely away from the table. Then the magician asks a nearby spectator to think of any card in the deck and keep it to themselves. It is really a free choice and they can change their mind if they wished to do so. There is still only that one card face-down on the table by itself. For the first time the spectator names their thought of card. After a couple seconds of reviewing the fairness of what just happened to the spectator, the card that was sitting on the table the whole entire time is simply turned over. That card is the spectators merely thought of card! While you are wondering in astonishment how this could be possibly be accomplished, let me quickly give you a small background on this effect. I first was inspired to come up with a solution to this effect after I purchased my first Invisible Deck. It just popped into my head one day while playing with the Invisible Deck and I could never get it out of my head. So finally a few years later it has become a reality and it works great! It has the option of being performed impromptu, but I prefer the more advanced method for a number of reasons. When trying to come up with a name for this effect and seeing if there was anything similar, I stumbled upon this beautiful site and found Dean Dill has an effect called "The Revelation." It is a very clean effect and similar in some ways, and if you haven't checked it out yet I would. Although similar, his uses a folded card in an envelope so I was relieved to see I didn't create the same effect. Amazingly though, both of our titles have the word "Revelation" in it even though I came up with it before searching here online! So seeing how the title fits good (since his is in an envelope and my prediction is out in the open... of course that doesn't mean mine is better, it just means their different) I kept the name "Open Revelation"! Anyways, I would like to thank you all for reading, and once again please give me some feedback on what you think of my work. -Sam Weiss

Hi Mr. Weiss:
BTW, Great effect! One question: It is you that reveals the card, correct? (Not the spec.) Warmest regards, Sixten |

I am however working towards letting the spectator turn the card over but I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. Even then, doing that would just be pure aesthetics. After all, it would be just chasing something that no one's running after. Thanks again, Sam Weiss

One question arises out of effect descriptions like yours. Most descriptions are the perfect outcome, and when buying the effect, find out there's really very heavy handed outs. Is your description a 100% outcome?

Sounds like a great effect. May I make a suggestion? Don't rush this into a one trick DVD like so many youngsters have. Really develop this and keep it. Move on and develop another mind blower, then another. When you're a seasoned performer, you can release them to the community as an experienced , well rounded magician. That's when you'll make a name for yourself.

Reality Check:
Are you sure this isn't in existence somewhere already? How much research have you done? Naming your trick "Open Revelation" and then looking up similar names isn't research, and won't tell you anything of value. You need to be careful with descriptions of tricks. For folks in the know, what you wrote in your first post contains enough information to indicate that there are obviously holes in the description you've offered. I'm not sure what you're after with your post, but the key to releasing a successful effect is putting in the research efforts long before you do a public description of the effect, announce the release of the effect itself, or state your intention to release the effect in the future. You may have a winner here, or you may have re-invented something that already exists, quality research is the difference between somebody thinking they've invented the best trick in the world, and somebody realizing that they've simply re-invented something that has already been around for a while. No offense, but you're obviously young, and used your first post to tell folks that you've invented a fantastic new trick.........it's something that's been played out on the Magic Café thousands of times.......and to a tee, no "new" effect has ever been quite what the first time poster thought it was. As I said in the first line....."Reality Check"......it's something all effect creators make a habit of doing before releasing any information on their "new" effect, be they young or old. |

Bill,
Thanks for the warning... I actually wasn't planning to sell this because I thought I would have too many complaints that people don't like the method and it doesn't work for them. For this reason I'm keeping it to myself for awhile because I invented this to work for my performance style personally. silverking, I agree with you. I have left many holes in the description and may have not gotten the message out clear enough. What I was trying to say was DURING my research (I was actually researching the effect throughout the inventing process... sorry I wasn't clear on that) I found this site, I didn't just start off and find this site. Is this effect REALLY original?... frankly no... there are slight variations out there such as "The Revelation." What I meant to point out was this effect is not original but the exact method is, and I'm 99% sure (through my studies) that my method is original. I am only 99% sure because you can never be sure any method is original since an effect could have possibly been written in an out dated text. Another thing to mention is I have found when I researched there were a couple effects that used the same "master move" but the principle, and the move itself vary. Also what I meant by "new effect" was my method is, as far as I can see original, and since different methods create a different looking versions of an effect I thusly coined it a "new effect." There was a reason why I did this as my first post (sorry if it was a "cliché" first post for someone young). It was because I just wanted to introduce myself to you guys as a young magician who is experienced enough to create a beautiful piece of magic for an audience, but it apparently when the opposite way and made people perceive I was just another young magician who had ambitions to big for his own shoes. After all though, just because I am a first time poster and I'm young doesn't mean I am inexperienced and don't know how to research an effect properly. I'll have you know a lot of my research was not online. It was by showing it to well experienced magicians and seeing if they knew anything like it. Once again, having to explain all this is completely my fault and I apologize. Please personally inform me what I can do to contribute to this community without being called out for my age. Should I take my picture down? I perceive if I took it down people would help me out not because of my age, but because there is something that needs explaining or change like it was in this case. I understand I am very young and possibly ignorant and ill-informed, but please, before you assume I'm just another young magician... get to know me personally. I think that is fair to ask of all of you. With care, Sam Weiss P.S. I didn't mean you guys personally were "bashing" me about my age. Actually you guys were quite nice about it and I hope I didn't say the above too harshly. It's just I've had bad experiences on other forums were even though I was as polite as I could be, older magicians specifically told me to "buzz off" because I was trying to help by giving them performance advice and they didn't like that because I was younger than them.

Sam,
As Silverking said, if there are a lot of holes in the description, it doesn't matter what anyone's opinion is as the opinions are based on fiction. On the other hand if it's really original, you should at least type it up and send a few copies out. One, it would establish authorship and date, two, one of those people might see it as alread being written up somewhere. Tom |

That's very good advice to send out a few copies. I didn't think of that at all. I'm going to try and send a few around now. Thanks for the heads up.

Sam, you're presuming too much in terms of my response to your post.
You need prove nothing to anybody but yourself, and you need not apologize for your age. My post simply asked questions for your consideration, and brought forward thoughts that you might be interested in. There's nearly 40,000 people on the Magic Café, and you don't need to "invent" a new effect to be welcome here. Those who've posted here for a few years have seen hundreds of new effects invented by young magicians.......the great number of which turn out to be well established methods, long known, but not yet discovered by the new effect creator. The good news is that it's all good!........researching an effect in depth and detail is something even magicians who've been at this for decades have to do. Look around the Café and you'll find plenty of magicians with 30+ years of magic behind them soliciting advice as to whether their new idea is in fact an old idea. Best of luck to you! |

This effect I must say though is one of those spectator bafflers but some magicians can see through it. For that reason I'm a little reluctant to post a video for this particular effect. Sorry for the disappointment

Sounds just like a Lorayne effect I've been doing for a long time...
-Card placed on table -Spec names any card -Card is shown to be spectator's mental selection Obviously a few things are missing from the technical description but that's exactly how it plays to the audience.
