All magicians are frauds, I’d say –
for pretending to offer mysteries and illusions;
when, in fact, they offer congruency
and destruction of delusions.

A politicians panders promises and never follows through,
while a salesman fills silly wants instead of actual needs;
and teachers promise what they have no knowledge of –
a job in which one is paid for productivity.

I won’t speak about preachers who juggle fear and greed,
or spouses to whom commitment is a fantasy;
for each day you deal with falsehood and complacency
where average is worshipped through deniability.

Then comes the magician, even you –
who offers a solution to confusion,
and proof that dreams can be captured;
and all with controlled predictability.

They say we seek to fool, or merely entertain,
but there is no calling finer, than to promise and deliver --
to laugh at things mysterious and turn adversity to glee,
and provide escape from dreary and pretended reality.
