Typically, the duration of copyright is the whole life of the creator plus fifty to a hundred years from the creator's death, or a finite period for anonymous or corporate creations. Some jurisdictions have required formalities to establishing copyright, but most recognize copyright in any completed work, without formal registration. Generally, copyright is enforced as a civil matter, though some jurisdictions do apply criminal sanctions. - Donald

Great info Donald, so anyone can take over the Ed Harris work. No one to sue ya.
I really don't think Ed Harris would like his work to be not used. This happens all the time in magic, things lost forever, Russ Walsh comes to mind, as Joe Finchel (sp) of Metamorpho Spots inventor great props. U.F. Grant had hundreds of magic tricks and props, now lost. It is not only the tricks lost, but the methods used to make them. No one today seems to know how to make a Milk Pitcher insert. Terrible shame, is what it is. |

Bill, his next of kin could probably sue you. Normally when someone dies and has no will,
everything goes to next of kin, including copyrights? Tom

From what I understand, the proper thing to do is to leave it alone for 50 years after the author's death. So, that means to leave the Eric Paul and Ed Harris material alone.
Just because you think you can "get away with it", isn't a good reason to do so. Someone did approach Eric's widow, and make a legit deal that benefits Eric's kids, with one product. That was the RIGHT thing to do. Could you really live with being someone who steals from his kids? As I said, just buy a used version as a collectable. Why bother with discussing making illegal copies and selling them? What's next? Are you going to suggest to someone to start printing copies of Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic, because Hank Lee's closed? - Donald P.S. Legitimate original copies of the products do show up now and then, as used for sale items. For instance, I know of someone selling a couple of real Eric Paul products right now. I've seen his posts on Facebook. And I've seen a different real product on Ebay.

I have all the Ed Harris non-copyrighted material I bought directly from Ed Harris years ago. I only have the material pertaining to magic. So I am all set, it is just to bad for others.
In 50 years those promotional pieces will be worthless, they are kind of time limited. No one does much of anything in black and white now-a-days. To address the legal comments, no one could afford to file an action concerning this material. It would be just to expensive. "Proper thing to do", wouldn't it be nice if everyone thought that way. |

Well I checked and found Kenosha Magic sells Michael's CD for $24 plus around $5 shipping. Needless to say I bought this one. Check them out at http://www.kenoshamagic.com/product/item/22

As I said on the other topic Curt, you have a good deal. However I like the ability to customize my own, that's why I like Mike's CD from KenoshaMagic. That way I can have bills for Professor Paddy, another for Miss Ruthie (my wife the face painter) and yet another for Paddy the Clown. Plus I have the ability to aim the ad to suit a festival and be able to charge extra for that.

There are people who would rather have a turn-key type of deal where they can just order an item and forget about it instead of taking the hours it takes to get a very polished and professional looking piece. Like I said, I'm not intending on this being a side business or doing hundreds of these bills. I'm just offering to help those who do not want to go through the fuss, bother and frustration of trying to do it themselves.

I received Michael Messing's CD with the Jumbo dollar. Had some problems because of my stupidity with Photoshop and called him. Michael spent a couple of hours with me walking me thru everything until I was putting out some REALLY nice looking dollars!! No extra charge and he was happy to help me. I strongly urge anyone who is thinking of using anything like this get Michael's CD for less than $30 it is the finest on the market.

Thank you, Peter! I hope the bill is as successful a marketing piece for you as it has been for me.

Is there anyone who still sells the Mystery Dollar or something similar. I did find Brad Ross, but it does appear a bit pricey.

Hi "The Baldini" -
I think that Michael Messing is still selling his version of the mystery dollar (you can order it directly from him). And he's active here on the Café. Did you send him a PM to ask him about it? He posted sample images on this thread from last year: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=17 - Donald

Thanks for directing Dave to me, Donald. I appreciate it. I do, indeed, still sell my version (the New Jumbo Magic Dollar Bill.)

Michael replies very fast and with great info, his product was easy to follow and customize. Mine is currently at my local printer waiting for me to pick up, you can also print it with your home printer, but I am going with half black & white, half color to see which I like more, I also printed a large quantity. I resized mine to be closer to a real bill so I can combine a TT trick, I can pull out a silk or salt pour etc. Sort of a twofer.
The best part is the cost, it's the best deal you will find. Thanks to Donald & Michael, this is what the Café is supposed to be. Dave |
