The Curator V.I.P. Beware Vampire, I have 3908 Posts |
The Curator, Marco Pusterla, Christian Schenk and Carl Gibson are proud to announce the release of Paradise Lost in a very limited edition.
This is my most cherished routine and the opener of my most classical Bizarre Magic show. The story may be found on the Magic Café. |

The effect will be available very soon, but in a very limited edition... Buyers of "Hauntiques" will be notified in advance.
Everybody else can keep an eye on this page: http://hauntiques.com/paradiselost.htm which links back to the Café and the story by The Curator. This is going to be a nice piece of theatre for the discerning few... |

Paradise Lost is ready...
It's now stored securely in the bowels of the Surnateum (http://www.surnateum.org) from where it will come out on September 9, 2009: 9/9/9... this is a mystical number, very well related to the story. For once, Bizarre Magick will be gifted with a detailed study on how to integrate a story with technical methods to accomplish the magic, something hardly ever discussed deeply in the past. And, for once, it won't be "almost impossible" to locate the necessary "hauntiques" to perform one of The Curator's effects... this if the "hauntiques" in Paradise Lost won't haunt the Surnateum in the next few weeks! Buyers of Christian Chelman's book, "Hauntiques", should check their mailboxes in the next few days for an important pre-release announcement. Everybody else... "stay tooned" All the best, |

How about the Hauntiques owners who bought the book from somewhere other than MPMagic? Are we eligible for the advance order?

Don't forget that the effect will be available also from Card-Shark ( http://www.card-shark.de ) if you don't want to get in the MPMagic mailing list (I probably send out an email once every two or three years! ). I'm grateful to all those who bought a copy of Hauntiques from a dealer as well: it's also thank to you all that this book has been such a wonderful success! However, I'm not grateful to the son-of-a-so-and-so who scanned the book and made it available to file-sharing sites... All the best, |

The leaflet contains a number of subtle (and not-so-subtle) references to the magic and entertainment world which may be appreciated by the owners of the effect, and will act as a reminder of the technical sequence while in plain view of the audience. Papa Shango impersonated the stereotype of the Voodoo Priest and as the leaflet (and the story behind "Paradise Lost") is about a "Ghost and Voodoo Tour", the stereotype was necessary... Many thanks for your question, all the best, |

Thanks Marco. I PM'd ya.
Regarding scans, you may want to employ a tactic Jerome Finley used to protect TnR. The manuscript was printed on red paper. I assume it will be difficult to scan but I know from experience as a graphic designer that it will be almost impossible to Xerox. The colors blend into each other when copied. It may not be applicable to a book like Hauntiques (and it's beautiful just the way it is) but it might be useful for shorter instructions like the one I assume will be included with Paradise Lost. Thanks again for considering those of us who bought from other dealers. |

Steve Duscheck intentionally printed many instruction sheets on red and other color papewr to prevent iy from being Xeroxed. H e passed the tip on to mr back in the days we corresponded.

The problem with instructions printed on red card is that the black ink tends to fade after a number of years: I have some magazines that were published in the eighties on red paper and now the ink is almost faded Furthermore, I personally believe that reading from a red book is not a good experience for all those who legitimately acquired the book/effect and they don't deserve it. Yes: I will sell less copies of the book but those who download a PDF would have bought the book? And certainly they didn't enjoy a book of the quality of Hauntiques. The booklet that comes with "Paradise Lost" is 24 pages on the same quality paper as used for Hauntiques: to have that printed on red paper would have made the photos way too dark to really show what's going on. Christian Chelman and I want to give to our customers a quality product: I believe Christian's magic deserves to be presented in the best possible way. Many thanks for the suggestions, everybody! |

I do not understand, particularly with Hauntiques which is a beautifully produced tome, why anyone would want to read something on a screen when you can hold the thing, the book itself, in your hands. I, for one, believe our upcoming paperless society is losing too much.
Anyway, looking forward to Paradise. . . Mark

Mark, I love books. Reading on a screen does not compare in any way. I find it uncomfortable and distracting.

Printing on red wouldn't have any effect on people who wanted to scan it anyway - just scan it in colour. With todays broadband speeds, who cares about large file sizes.
Anything man can produce, he can imitate given enough time / money and inclination. Even passports and other RFID impregnated documents have been shown to be imitated (not that I have personal experience of forging these ). You can't beat those flappy papery things tied up with string. Reading on screen is a right royal pain - I can't see how it'll ever replace the good old paper we've been using for 1000s of years (and which is more enviromentally friendly than the energy guzzling e-readers / PCs etc). Books have much faster bootup times and don't crash on you. Hauntiques was the first "real" magic book I bought (bar RRTCM) and it's one of a few I take away with me on holidays and gets reactions from people when they see it around (but never get to open the pages lest they turn into a toad . Cheers, Matt |
