Perhaps the thinking behind painting the balls has nothing to do with how they look now, but later.
Perhaps the material, tightly woven around the ball, loosens over time, as many fabrics do. If the ball underneath is painted, there is little to no noticeable change in the color/appearance of the ball. I have had some cheap balls where the material is loose, and you can clearly see the cork underneath. Sounds like just a little bit of added insurance to make sure the ball looks as good as it can for as long as it can.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Brett, it's great to see you back on the Café. Congratulations on the book! Your attention to detail in construction of apparatus is always laudable - I look forward to reading your written word. Please keep us posted on its release.

No. Why does a race car driver chrome the tail pipe? Does it increase performance? No. And even ordinary people would prefer to drive a BMW over a Yugo, when it's still just a mode of transportation. I would suggest that there is a certain amount of "personal pride" involved in our selection of the props we use for our profession. Does the audience care that the cups I'm using are made by hand in .925 Sterling Silver? No. But I do. It does nothing for the magic - nothing... but it's my personal preference. If I tell the audience the cups were given to me by my father, who got them from his father and I was trained in their secrets by my ancestors, then the cups have a legacy, and so do I. (And I have to live up to it!) The audience will most certainly find the cups mystifying because they are not ordinary everyday objects, and that is NOT a bad thing. The spectator CAN care about the prop, IF you suggest that they should. |

I only wanted to use your quote to point out this minor fact of the apparent simple construction of my Deluxe Balls and their history. Most C&B workers I've found, through experience, may buy the cheapest because of their economic situation and that is all they can afford – nothing wrong with this. More likely I'm convinced most magicians simply do not know the amount of experience, thought and attention to detail that I put into all my equipment, so they may assume two props are the same and do the same things and then buy the cheaper model. Please note this is just a generalization and not pointed at my friend Pepka. I had planned to debut my Deluxe Balls with my cups in Jan. 2003, but they had to wait, because my supplier quit on me. 2004 they came out and were then immediately copied. The reason I personally paint the inner balls is because of this same attention to detail. I think it looks cheap to be able to see the inner ball colour as a contrast between the crochet work and I feel anything mediocre in appearance devalues the magical impression on the spectator. If you could do real magic would your props be inferior? Just a personal thing I guess…? If my Deluxe Balls were made for stage - there would be no reason to paint them before the crochet work. However they are for very intimate close-up work. I manufacture the best equipment I can, by drawing on my professional performance career of 30 years. I personally use all my own equipment and, yes, I guess I obviously have high standards. I searched about one year to find the perfect inner ball with many prototypes made and rejected, then the perfect subtle reflective metallic crochet thread to match my Engraved Silver Cups took much time to locate as well. About a year later I began pre-painting the inner balls. After all of this time, 'trial and error' and money I finally get excited and debut my Deluxe Balls. Then another couple of magic manufacturers say to themselves - 'Hey - that is a really nice looking manipulation ball - I'll have that'! No thank you … no Do You Mind etc… nothing...just take it after all my research and invested money, not to mention having the personal INSPIRATION - completely taken... I find it very demoralising within the magic fraternity that this kind of thing happens, but hey - guess what - I'm learning - the hard way. Dealing magic changes one's perspectives. The copyrighted book is coming… Anyway those are the facts of the matter. Thanks DDecae – it's nice to be back at least between gigs… Kind Regards, Brett Sherwood |

Brett, when are you coming back over to the States again? You should have been at WMS for the cups symposium. Several of your customers were in attendance.

WMS would have been fun, but due to personal life changes and professional commitments - unfortunately I couldn't make it. I know it would have been wonderful to finally meet up with old friends again and make acquaintance with new ones. Hopefully 2010 or 2011 will be kinder with my schedule.
