When we build a prop that uses a glow plug we use the type that are used in kerosene heaters. You can get these at any hardware or home improvment store.
I searched the net for "kerosene heater parts" and found lots of different styles but your local hardware store is still the easiest. |

Some mfg. call them igniters. I'll try to go back and get a link for you.
This site has a good picture of all three types. http://www.worldmkting.com/heater_accessories.htm Hope this helps. |

Another place to obtain glow plugs is at the hobby store. They are used in gas powered radio control vehicles. Good luck!

But those glow plugs can't ignite fire to light the flash paper. Am I right?

There is a difference between glow plugs and igniters. Glow plugs are meant to be reused, igniters are not.
Ignitors are based on the "bridge-wire" principle, which says that if you try to pass too much current through a thin wire, it will become incandescent. This is similar to a glow plug, but unlike a glow plug an ignitor has a charge like a matchhead that is ignited when the bridge-wire is heated, thereby giving a better result when igniting a secondary charge, like flash paper. This is similar again to using a squib...except squibs are usually much faster acting than ignitors and usually go "pop" instead of "poof". For experimenting with really cheap but reliable ignitors, try #33 enamelled wire, matchheads, nail polish and a twelve volt battery. Use this only to see how ignitors work, do not use this to ignite flammable materials as any mishap due to negligence or ignorance may open you up to criminal or civil litigation. |
