Actually nothing is magic by themselves. Not optical illusions, black art etc. But they all are used to create magic Smile

Magic is a state of Mind. The willingness to suspend what we know or believe to be true and to "Believe" for the moment that reality can be manipulated. This is the moment when we are free from the shakles that bind us to the material/physical World in which we live. The "Laws Of Nature" (physics) no longer apply.
That's my take on it Smile .

We have about three or four threads on "what is magic".

It's simplest to start with;

1) It happens in stories
2) People feel it when they associate into stories

3) You can bring it into common/shared reality when you are careful about the story you ask others to live.

4) Magic is NOT neither an objectively measurable force like gravity nor the application of technology to offer wish fulfillment. Magic is not the technology itself nor is it mere knowledge. As Iven mentioned above, magic is a feeling or cognitive frame that colors the rest of one's perceptions when present.

Optical Illusions are not Magic they are Physical stuff.

BUT...

What you can do with it is Magic. The Magic is in the way you perform not in the technical you use. Magic is in the eyes of the public. In the way you make him dream. In the way you show him things that he cannot believe.

I do `magic' for my spectators. I use illusions to fool the eye and the mind.. I use tools, gimics or distractions to fool them into seeing and believing something that isn't there... An optical illusion is a tool that fools the eye and mind all by itself so I believe it is a form of magic.

Today, I was going through my old "stuff' and found a set of nesting boxes.
One color fits inside, then the other color.
Looks like magic to me.
Here kitty, kitty,kitty. Smile

Not quite. It FEELS magical when you consider that earlier you had the inside/outside boxes reveresd. It's a META-cognition.

consider that if you simply showed someone the conditoin of the boxes at present, it would only get you a "so what". ONLY after you reverse the inside/outside of the boxes can the processing necessary to generate the feeling of magic occur.

Magic is subject to the will of the magician
Optical illusions are what they are as you see them.

More specifically, an optical illusion is subject to variation as you walk around it and see it from different angles etc. Magic on the other hand starts out normal, then something happens ( the magic ) and winds up impossible, but still normal. The floating lady does not disappear into the night sky like a balloon. The zig-zag lady does not walk out of the box in that condition to do the rest of the show and greet the audience.

If there were a way to switch on/off an optical illusion secretly, then you would have a magic trick.
