Two sad stories within the space of a day for this hotel chain.

Bombing at a Marriott hotel in Jakarta:

Falling concrete from a Marriott facade kills a woman dining in an adjacent sushi restaurant:

While I've never been to (nor intend to visit) Jakarta, I frequently eat at the sushi restaurant mentioned in the story above whenever I am in Montreal. I'm not sure I will want to anymore, in future.

What are the odds of it happening again?

My wife is afraid of flying and doesn't really want me to fly, either. But her father was killed in a plane crash, so I always say, "What are the odds of you losing both your husband and your father to plane crashes?"

But maybe that's not as logical as it sounds to me. I ain't very good at the logic thingy.

I agree with you stone. something like that could happen again but why spend rest of one's life worrying if it's going to happen? Chances are not high that it would.

I can understand your wife's feeling on the flying but again chances of it happening to you as well are very very small.

If you like going some where go there still even if something tragic happened. You will more then likely be fine. I go into the original M.G.M. Hotel and casino in Vegas all the time. It's now Bally's and yes The original M.G.M. had the horrible fire that killed about 80 people in 1979. Not going to stop going someplace because something bad happened.

In the case of concrete falling off of a building's facade (I think that is the correct word), yes, it could happen again in the near term. If one piece fell off because of structural failure or faulty installation or concrete fatigue (or whatever the proper words are), I think the chances are actually pretty decent that another slab on that same facade might also be ready to drop sometime soon. At the very least, the facade needs to be inspected.

I suppose I probably will eat at the restaurant in question again, but not before such an inspection is done.

I'm guessing an inspection took place as soon as this happened.
I have a friend who heard horror stories about people who valet their cars, so she'll never use valet.
I know someone else who won't travel to Mexico because she's afraid she'll get sick.
A friend in college has vowed to never eat at Jack in the Box again because of the e. Coli incident some years back.

If you live your life in fear, then you're not really living at all...you could cross a street and get hit by a bus. Does that mean you'll never cross the street again? Living your life by what MIGHT happen only causes you to miss out. No point in doing that.

Of course one should not live one's life in fear, but at the same time you also need to be aware of the facts of a situation and exercise appropriate caution / care.

In this case, Montreal has had a rash of incidents like this in recent years, bridges failing, concrete falling off of structures, etc. A report on a bridge collapse a couple of years ago was pretty bad. It found engineers from the schools there were poorly trained in some respects (they were trained to build and forget structures, not to build structures that last), and that the concrete used in some structures was substandard.

About inspections, a bridge that collapsed in 2006 was regularly inspected yet the inspectors missed all signs that it was about to collapse.

As for this particular building adjacent to the sushi restaurant, an engineer inspecting the building has already said that he sees signs of other concrete slabs showing signs of coming apart:

Given that, I think you will agree that some caution and care is warranted.
