Wanlu,
I'm wasn't familiar with David Kaye - although I have heard of Brad Ross. Personally I wasn't offended by the clip - there are plenty of bad ventriloquists. I thought it WAS poor comedy. No imagination and not very well done. Kind of came across (to me) as a smug look down their nose at the art. Maybe they've never seen a good vent.

The video doesn't say much for their skills or comedy. It doesn't provide a reason that anyone would want to learn anything from either of them. Not sure why Kid-abra would even put that on their site. It does nothing to promote the convention.

I think that if that exact video was done by a nobody like me...I might get some nasty remarks from the vent community. But then again...that's just what I think. Smile

If I were to make a spoof of a magician and maybe exagerate on a magic principle like for example the use of a technique called palming...and mention I learned it from Steven's Magic Emporium,I wonder what will happen. Smile

We have seen spoof videos on vents before...but not on vent techniques and then mention Maher.

I personally thought the video was funny til the part where they started exaggerating on word subsitution and mentioned they learned it from Naher. Smile

Again...it's just me and nice to know that vents don't find it disturbing. Smile

Maher was very helpful to this vent.(around 30 years)

I rememeber their used to be in jokes like "Gottle of geer".

Who said if you can't laugh at yourself, someone will beat you too it?

Okay I'n dack...

The video was funny...I was only disturbed by the way they were laughing at their own jokes. It felt like they were portraying ventriloquism as a lesser art considering the fact that the main actors in the video are superstar magicians. Plus the repeated obvious word substitution and the mention of Maher and the big laugh after that was really disturbing for me...yes, maybe just for me. Smile

So I'll ask the question I asked in that thread...if it were a nobody who will make an exact routine and post in YouTube, won't it offend anyone? It may only be called "suttle humor" because it was done by some big names in magic.

Nuff said...thanks Smile

You know, I wasn't get into this one, but.....

When I saw this the first time, (last week , I think), I was kind of surprised. The camera work was really bad, like it was shot on a cell phone or something similar. The whole bit seemed like it was cooked up while walking home from an evening at a bar ! It really wasn't very funny, although watching David in anything always makes me laugh. He is just funny to me ! Brad, on the other hand, looked kind of creepy, but then I have never been a big fan of the spikey hair look.

I am sure that their intentions were probably good, just trying to drum up business for the convention. I have known David for about five years now, and I can't imagine him going out of his way to insult anybody. I think maybe they just slapped this together without much forethought, and threw it online as a last minute promo for Pigeon Forge. I kind of doubt that many outside our "community" will see it.

I have to agree with Wanlu that if this had been done by a couple of nobodies, no one would have given it a second look. The fact that it was done by one of the biggest names in kids' magic, and a guy who is supposed to be a huge Disney star made it visible, and therefore put it under the microscope of all of the rest of us who wondered what the true intentions were. Wonder what Disney would have to say about this ? Smile

As an afterthought, I sure would love to have attended both VentHaven and KIDABRA this year, but the economy is teetering on insanity in my neck of the woods. I am blessed to have repeat clients that I have worked with for about five years now, so I am one of the lucky ones who is actually working. Many of my friends are not. The unemployment rate down here is 13.5% ! The national average right now is just under 10%. Again, to quote my friend, Wanlu, 'nuff said.....

Exactly what I mean...they can get away with it because they are superstars Smile I'm sure it was not their intention to offend anyone but if it were two regular guys posting the exact routine and patter in YOuTube, it may have been a different story.

That is a pretty lofty term - superstars. In all my years (25+) of professional work - I've never come across either of their names in a trade setting. Maybe because they've marketed themselves to the magic community, which doesn't exactly entitle them to the mantle you placed on them Wanlu. They are simply guys who are trying to make a living performing and selling their "expertise".

The video is pretty poor comedy in my opinion - no originality and no stretch. Says a lot for guys who want to "teach" other magicians.

Brad Ross, the guy who appears in the video as the "puppet" was the star performer in the Mickey Mouse Magic Show (other than Mickey!), a major touring production owned by Disney. In the magic community, he is indeed considered a star. He has had feature interviews in most of the well known magic magazines.

(not trying to sound lofty, just getting you up to speed !)

In regards to the silly video of Brad Ross & David Kaye it seems that everyone is looking into this too deep. It was just a spur of the moment goofy silly thing that was so spontaneous and done right on the spot on the streets of NYC. The Super stars Brad Ross & David Kaye, yes they are just that. Here are two guys who make a SERIOUS six figure income doing what most people can not do AND they love doing it. So if you have been in this TRADE for sometime and you have not heard about them, maybe you should stick your head out of the basket just a lil bit more!
A bunch of cool funny guys hanging out with each other!

This is just for me... but WHOEVER do that scene--superstars or not--I am not offended--being a vent. It really doesn't matter who the actors were. They just intended to do a funny scene--and whether they succeed or not it's not clear.

They were mocking/"exposing secrets of" ventriloquism to be funny, so what's new? The Amazing Jonathan made a successful career doing "failed" magic acts that are hilarious!

My point Tom was...those guys are no ordinary men, they have names in the business specially in Kidabra, that's why the joke seemed funny and as they say "suttle humor." I honestly believe that if it were two ordinary men doing the same act...even Kidabra folks might be offended.

Hi John,

Were you guys even sober when you took the video? Smile

Spur of the moment? which means you were wallking in the streets of NYC with a big bucket? Smile The lines seemed rehearsed and the vent routines seemed rehearsed...

As you can see, its only me who feels this way so we don't really have a problem, but for me, it was done in poor taste. Two or three super stars having fun at the expense of some vent secrets...and make the art look pathetic.

I have seen lots of funny vent scenes done by non vents...but this one was technically insensitive.

I'll make a video and post a link here...let's see if it's still funny. Smile

So if it were three nobody's doing the exact video...it will still be funny?

If it were Jeff Dunham, Terry Fator and Ronn Lucas doing the exact video, It will be so funny FOR ME!

If it were David, Brad and John doing a video mocking a magic routine it will be funny FOR ME!

If it were Jeff, Terry and Ronn mocking a magic secret...then say they are great magicians because they learned it from Kidabra then invites everyone to VentHaven, that would not be so funny. Smile TO ME ALONE and I don't intend to ask anyone to feel as I feel, we all have different views.
