I would probably have 2 full length routines (i.e. A sponge ball and 1 Coin routine) with 2 longer single tricks (ACR, mentalism effect), with a couple quick filler effects/routines if someone asks for more (Pen through bill, quick card effects, ect.). With an over shirt with 2 breast pockets and deck holder on my belt, I can carry all this and more on me, and walk up to a group supposedly empty-handed. On a side note, instant or fast reset is a must. As with how much to charge, if you are a beginner, as I am, to an extent, I would suggest $250-$300. Hope this helps, JIMC64

As with how much to charge, if you are a beginner, as I am, to an extent, I would suggest $250-$300. WOW!!!! I can tell ya that if I payed $300.00 for a beginnier, I would be pretty ticked off. Think about it. The show isn't going to be polished, lots of mistakes will likely be made, more thought would have gone into the technique and not into the "entertaining" of the audience, the performer will likely be extremely nervous which will also effect how well they perform, etc., etc., etc. I would say that if you're a "beginner" (and depending on your market), your price point should be between $100 - $150. As you become more seasoned at performing, then you can move up to that next bracket which would be the $200 - $300 range. Advice...if you ARE a beginner and you do decide to price on the "higher" end of things, do not offer a 100% satisfaction guarentee as I see so many magicians doing these days...you'll be working for free a lot would be my fear!

The reason I say $250-$300 is because, althoguh I am technically a "begginner" I do have some experience in strolling, table hopping, and stage that $50 dollars an hour seems fair to me for this big of an even. For 4 hours that would be... oh, oops. Ok, nevermind. I take back that $250-$300 suggestion. Instead I say $200-$250. That's $50 an hour plus another $50 for the length of the event.
Does this logic somehow seem flawed to you, lyle? Looking forward to your insights. JIMC64

I wonder if the guy that asked the original question is ever going to chime back in. Like Scott said, without some more information about him and the event, it's kinda hard to offer any assistance.

As I said prior, as a beginner, if you were charing that per hour then I would feel screwed at the end of the night. I apologize. Yes, I think as a beginner in strolling, billing $50 - $75 per hour would be acceptable.

Right. There's no rate book for Magicians I don't think. I don't think there's a Magicians Union setting minimum scale and work conditions. Its all up to you. Remember this. Entertainers get they money.

Tabman is right about one thing. You had better be used to standing up 4 hours straight. I only break I took was to drink some water to keep myself hydrated.
It would be difficult to keep up the energy if you couldn't last 4 hours of strolling. It wouldn't look good if you had to sit down. It was mentioned that some of the effects should play to several groups of people at once. This is true. If you think about it, four spectators per group, you would need to do 100 different sets to allow most of the people to see some magic. Picking the type of magic to perform is not that easy. It needs to be visual ( DJ in background ), small enough to carry easily, instantly resetable and surround-proof. Also add wind at an outdoor event into the equation. Before you ask, some of the magic I performed included sponge balls, color-changing hanks, walk-around "Thing" presentation, cards ( NFW, several in-the-hands routines ) and coins. What effects would others add to these sets? Think about it. Sometimes classics are classics for a reason. |

Thanks for the advise so far. And for my experiance, well I worked at Houdini's Magic Shop in Las Vegas for 7 years and was one of there best demonstrators, also performing at the Rainforest Café at the MGM Grand, did walk arounds in parks, night clubs, and on the streets. last year I won two 1st place awards at the Houdini Club of Wisconsin Convention for Close-up Magic and Comedy Magic. My best trick is the UFO card. now this company that asked me to perform because a couple of employees saw me perform at a private show I did and recommended me. now I found out the company is will to pay up to $250.00 ( is it worth it?) its on Aug. 8 so if you got more advise, that would be great! thanks

It's only worth it if it's worth it to you. Don't worry about what others are making, if you do it for what they're offering and at the end of the gig you feel good about what you made then it's worth it. Some people would jump at 250 for four hours, others would laugh at it. Forget others, do what feels right for you.

No Eddie...actually I was really wanting to know how many hours. But then I looked at his first post and saw 4 hours. So, 250 for 4 hours for a big company tells me they are just looking for cheap entertainment.
I wouldn't do it but that might be fine if he is just starting out. |

AH, sorry. Thought you were joking about what they offered him with the triple question mark thing. My bad.
It looks the same way to me, but if you've never done this type of thing, why not?
