WOW!
I guess it's just like all the people who want to book you for a show for EXPOSURE. Is a performers time not valuable? Why is it that so many people are so clueless when it comes to the business of magic?
I had the rare experience to take a handful of lessens from one of Dai Vernon's students several years ago. I paid for the lessons because I felt that he deserved to be paid for his knowledge and time. It was some of the best money I have ever spent.
Your time is valuable guys and the more you lesson the value of what you do the more you show why it is that people don't take our art seriously. It truly boggles my mind how obtuse some people are.
I can understand trading lessons for something else. I can understand mentoring young performers too. Coaches in almost every field get paid for their time. Why shouldn't we?
I have had a few students over the years and all of them got more than their money's worth. I charged them a very fair price and what they got in return was some practical effects that they could use to show their friends, perform at the bar they worked at to make more tips etc.
Hanging out with other magicians and sharing ideas is one thing. If you can afford to teach people on a regular basis for free than more power to you but it certainly makes it difficult to justify your fees for your performance if you give away the tools so they can DO IT THEMSELVES.
Just food for thought.
