The ten bucks I spent on Bobo's Modern Coin Magic. Literally years of use out of it, and introduced me to my favourite kind of magic in the world.
The current economic crisis is due to all the coins I've vanished.

I spent 50 cents at a convention auction (1959) for a "any drink called for" trick as a gift for a old magician back home who gave a lot of cocktail parties.
In return he gave me a set of Conradi Blocks (Cubalibra) now worth about $300 and an original Spirit Bell (1925)- value ????. Of course, I had to practice and perform them to secure the deal at one of his parties, and as a kid learned a lot about "backroom" deals -- priceless.

Well I didn't buy really much, but I think the Royal Road to Card Magic (even when I'm still at the overhand shuffle) was a very good purchase, also because it's not expensive. Also, I like my ITR, but that was more expensive.

I have Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic too
but with a ubbelieveable price 49 CENTS plus 3.99$ shipping Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic is a great book but I like the Tarbell books more because Tarbell teach each trick more carefully with a very detail " how to do it " Mark do the same thing with tricks and how to improve it but when I read Mark sometime I must stop and try to figure " what is he trying to say? " (may be because my bad English?) Just my opinion only. |

Wouldn't want to single out one item really...
I suppose I have derived the most pleasure from my Lennart Green DVDs, the most learning out of the Card College series, the best handling out of the Gold Seal Bicycle cards and the best carry around use from my JOL Pocket Billfold wallet. So many other things I cannot live without... my closeup mat, my webcam for online sessions, etc etc. Not all of them cheap, but invaluable in terms of where they have taken me in my personal development.

Definitely all my Tarbell volumes... I payed $200 but they are worth every penny and I still go back to them at least once a week... and I still find something new in them.
I also found the Art of Astonishment books have my style of magic in them so I read those over a lot too.

A blue sport coat for $4.25.
Also a guy who was selling all his magic stuff for $350.00 which was worth well over $1000.00. Which is what got me back into the magic scene.

My first magic order included five items, one of which was a Vanishing Key. It sold for $2, and included instructions for doing the French Drop. That is still my preferred method for making something disappear or change into something else, whether it's just pulling the same quarter out of a kid's ear (over and over) or doing Mark Wilson's double torn and restored tissue. After fourty years I'd have to say that I've gotten more than my money's worth.
...what if I could read your mind?

I'm going to break my answer into three categories.
Book: Mark Wilson's Complete Course (I have not pulled the trigger on Tarbell yet) DVD: Bill Abbott Performs Magic for Kids Prop: Spongeballs or TT (these tie in my affections) The book has loads of great stuff, some hard to really recognize as such until you see a trick performed and realize that the mechanics can be simple but presentation makes the whole performance into magic. Abbott's DVD set has inspired me in ways that I had not expected. I think I relate to him so much because he has a similar sense of humor to mine. Good magic without a lot of pre-packaged props. The spongeballs get a better reaction than any other pocket trick I've yet blown money on. I have enough tricks to fill three hours, but only love enough to fill 45 minutes. The spongeballs are a great thing. The TT is a cheap, simple, wonderful way to make total magic happen. With a few ideas (Tarbell has the Passe Passe Salt, for example) about how to make things work, it is possible to take a $3 prop and astound people. For me the value of owning a TT is that I now try to think of new ways to use it. I have not created any new tricks, really, but I have expanded my thinking. If I can find ways to do the same with other props, I will become a much better magician in a short time! (Example of what I might do: instead of vanishing a hankie and making it come back, I might take off my glasses, look through them like I'm seeing smudges or dirt, put them back on, reach into my left hand and pull out a hankie, wipe the glasses, put the hankie back into the hand, put the glasses back on, brush my hands to show them empty - not a stage trick as such, just a little bit of magic apparently without noticing others seeing me at it. Could provide a surprise in an act when someone else is shuffling the cards or whatever. By turning it around from the usual order of operations, it is a surprise instead of a repeat of a trick that many kids learn from their magic sets.) -Patrick |

TRICK - Axtell's Drawing Board - The most fun I've ever gotten with kid shows.
DVDS - Bill Malone's On The Loose (4 Vol. Set) - The most usable 'great' card magic plus invaluable explanations behind this genius's thinking. PROP - Wobble Wand - Greatest fun with a chosen assistant. BOOKS - Tarbell's Set - Best reference for all kinds of magic. If you only had this set, you can learn all the basics plus magic tricks that will keep you busy for years. Dave

Is the pleasure it brings to others. |

Probably the $140 I spent on a lightly used set of Tarbell at a magic auction.
