Well, being a radio disc jockey by trade, I had to supplement my income somehow, and someone suggested I perform for money. I've been doing various magic tricks since I was 12, but I'd have to say, for all the money I've spent on "magic" (horrors, I'm beginning to realize...),
Four Half Dollars, a deck of cards, some rope, maybe a levitation w/flash ending (IT)...really it was all about that. That's what people wanted, not floating balls, color-changing silks, card in balloons, which got great response, but never got asked for. I got a better, more intense response from a pen through a dollar, than I did with The Astrosphere, which is MUCH harder to do. A bottle cap popped through the bottom of a bottle, and cussing and swearing, and "no !@#$%^& way!" and all that, and I perform the color changing, vanishing, re-appearing silk, "...ahh, very nice, yes, very pretty..." Took me YEARS to practice the silk tricks, before I performed them! I practiced maybe a WEEK with Prohibition, and immediately killed with it! Sometimes it isn't money, but TIME. Time shopping (looking for new effects), time spent comparing, deciding what is your style, AFTER you shop and find things you like, but still haven't made a purchase. Time PRACTICING and developing a routine for the items you have decided for your act. After nearly 35 years, I just started practicing a vanish with Dollar coins, and three and a half or four years later, I've got help from people like Vinnie, and I have a new Click Pass! This is priceless. To be able to turn on a web cam, show a trick, and TEACH it, and sent it in an email...the mind freaking REELS! I probably would have spent considerable money AND time in another era, say the early to late seventies, just to acquire and LEARN the same effect. Being a part of the Maine Magician's Society gave me insight and introduced me to names like Steve Dacri, and Michael Ammar. Then Roth, and Rubinstein, and so on. I think the value in that alone, is why my coin magic has stayed my number one interest. My number one best spent money in the last few years...well that has to be an Expanded Ike shell. $60.00 well spent. Gotta admit though the quarter size gets more intense reaction. Well, is that enough detail? I could go on...(no I won't) I think someone else could tell us what is the thing you bought that launched your career, or is it, like me, many little things over years. Mine is no professional life, by any means. It's always been semi-pro, mostly amateur. Doug |

I'd have to say the Klutz book for about $8 - it got me into magic after years fo rnot really doing anything.
Then a giant B'Wave from Brad Burt's store in San Diego (closed now, sadly ...) - I could do it, it was "real" magic, and it floored people almost every time! The guy demo'd it and I said I'll take it! Didn't know how much it was until I got to the register - about $35. Ed |

It's so hard to just pick one…
Book: Mnemonica by Tamariz - This has become my "bible" of card magic. Being born with misshapen fingers, I've never been able to do card magic requiring a great deal of sleight of hand. However, all the principles and essays in Mnemonica (not just the stack) has been a great tool for me to develop new effects. Osborne Illusion systems - They are just great. DVD: Darwin's Inexpensive Illusions - When first starting out doing illusions I had no idea on where to begin. This dvd helped me a lot together with the Osborne books. And some other books which has been very important to me as a performing artist: An Actor Prepares, Creating A Role and Building a Character by Stanislavski. Though these books have nothing to do with magic, I think they are great books for learning how to perform on a stage, and being "an actor, playing the part of a magician". |

£2.50 for a TT, as said before an inexpensice device which can be used for a multiple of things, and when I performed a vanishing hanky effect it got more of a reaction than my ambitious card effect!
hey... ... what is this signature saying about me?!

Apocalypse - it's a bit expensive, I admit, but I know now how many other products I would not have bought, had I discovered this before. My monthly expenses for magic have dropped significantly as I don't buy much new stuff at all any more since.

My best bang for the buck last year was the Kandu Carton. If you do anything for kids, you gotta have this. Makes the little ones howl with laughter, and no skill required!

Props: Sponge Balls, Color Monte.
DVDs: Easy to Master Card Miracles. Any book or DVD that teaches Crazy Man's Handcuffs. (I learned from J Sankey's "Real Magic") |

Anything long-lasting that you can come back to again and again is always a great investment. For me it's the Tarbell series of books and the Jawdroppers videos. As for tricks or props-- I'll echo the sponge balls-- a great impact for the amount of money you spend.
