Just saw this at my local BJ's store..., couldn't resist thinking about how this could be used in mentalism....
It's a pen that records everything that is written, which you can upload to a computer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rF11--7iN40 |

Its obvviously electronic so no covert use of it... shame.

Right, but its wireless, and theoretically after someone writes or draws something...you could take the pen, place it down (onto docking station connected to a laptop or PDA) and obtain the info...
prob. not so practical now, but in a few years I'll bet there will be improvements that we can definitely capitalize on |

...Already, there are pens sold in toy stores that let kids draw a calculator and then use it by tapping on the drawn keys. The answers appear instantly on an LED screen in the pen's barrel. Also available are hi-tech writing implements that look very much like ordinary pens, but transmit whatever they're drawing or writing to remote computers or monitors. There are many entrepreneurs who've used these and similar technological marvels to create and market self-working mentalism effects. (The value of these effects is primarily in the profit derived by selling them to hobbyists. They are, however, guaranteed to fool anyone who doesn't read, watch television, or occasionally shop at Wal-Mart.) From Bob Cassidy's "One Man Billet Routines" |

Yes. Audience know about these things. So, if you decide to use electronic, use it wisely. Audience also know how magnet works but magicians use them anyway.

That is really incredible. Also the price is really low considering the technology involved.

If you can recover the outside of the pen, this would be "interesting" for PS work. I have been thinking about buying one of these for about a year since it came out. I recommended this device to my bro last year, for his doctor office situation.

I had seen this device advertised almost 7 yrs back.
I have mentioned this in some posts a couple of years back and this has a great role in pre-show work or QA effects. |

I like the idea, but I think the tech needs to be developed more before it becomes useful to us.

Gentlemen,
There is a device that achieves the same effect, but the pen looks a little more innocuous. It is part of the Digital Scribe kit manufactured by IOGEAR. It costs about $100 and is available from Internet stores and from brick and mortar stores, like Staples. With Digital Scribe, the pen, or stylus, transmits information to a receiver of sorts that clips on the top of a pad of paper. The information stored on this receiver can then be downloaded onto a PC via a USB cable. Obviously, you would need an assistant to retrieve the written information, but at least the method would not be so easily revealed. James Biss describes the use of this exact device in his second book entitled Mind Blowing. There are a few electronic impression devices on the market (e.g. Psychic Clipboard and Mind Buster) that achieve the same result, but each has its drawbacks and of course can fail. I think there is room to improve these devices from an electronic design point of view and I know at least one team that is working on it. Joe Finkler Vancouver, CANADA |

I agree, this has to be used judicially, but keep in mind magicians and mentalist use the mental epic and spirit slates even though many schools are now equipped with magic boards which are white boards that allow teachers to do many amazing things one in particular allows the teacher to write in the air while facing the class and what she writes appears on the board.

I have played around with this idea for a while. There is something that is possible with a device like this that is not suspicious. I have not got the idea completely down yet, but it is something I have been thinking about.

If I speak forth, many a mind will shatter,
And if I write, many a pen will break. .....and when I consider my own self, lo, I find it coarser than clay! |
