OK, my brother raves about his Mac. I have read the debates here on the Café. So last night, I got a Mac to replace my 3-4 year old PC. I'm enjoying it.
Now, wanting to get the most out of it, I'm thinking of buying one of the "Mac for Dummies" kind of books. Just looking for some suggestions re: a book/manual you have found helpful. On a scale from 1-10 re: my knowledge of computers, I would give myself a 5.5 or 6. Not looking for a real technical manual, but pleasant, hopefully enjoyable reading to make the most of it (its a 20" iMac). Thanks!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I'm assuming that you are coming from a Windows environment. If so, check out From Windows to OSX.
Another good one is Most of My Mac
If you can pull it off in a biker bar without being violated by a corn dog, more power to you.

My HP with the NVIDIA video card is in the shop for repairs, finally. Meanwhile, I'm using my wife's MacBook Pro. She bought the thing on a whim, thinking it was going to be "better." So far, she hasn't been able to get comfortable with it, and we plan to trade computers when mine gets out of the shop.
After talking a bit with my brother, who is an avid Mac user, I've managed to get past the differences, and I can tell you something... I'm not going back. Once you go Mac, you never go back. :D
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

David Pogue edits a series of books for Macs called "The Missing Manuals" which are really excellent. Assuming you have the Leopard operating system (OS 10.5) I would HIGHLY recommend Mac OS X Leopard (The Missing Manual) by David Pogue (who also happens to have written Magic for Dummies!)

Well.. Good luck with all that.
As far as the topic goes, any manual with the words 'Mac' and 'Dummies' in the title can't be to far off. V.

There's a good online series, in 30 parts, no less, over at Mac Tricks & Tips called "From Noob2Pro".
Here's the first post in the series (which starts so far back, it assumes you haven't even bought your Mac yet!). From there, read the article, scroll to the bottom, click the next post (the one pointing to the right), and repeat. |
