I am wanting to do a suspended SJ escape and am wondering where I can purchase a full body harness and everything else I need for safety purposes to perform this. I am wanting to do this soon but also want to get the harness etc so I can practice a bit as well befor performance. Also any other advise would be appriciated as well.
Thanks! Mike |

Why use a full body harness?
If you're doing several escapes in close succession the full body harness makes it much more comfortable than hanging from the ankles alone. Apart from that as long as what you use works I can't see it matters a great deal.

Only used a full brace once and it may have been only in my mind but it detracted from the suspension.
Also its unusual to be doing multiple SSJ`s in a day, most I have done was 2 in an eight hour show. Another thing to consider is unless the SSJ is a stand alone feature rather than the climax to a routine or full show then try wearing a full harness and performing as well !! Ken. |

As always Ken's experience shines through. I've done a few SSJ escapes and have always used circus loops ... They are used for various rope spinning tricks ... and are padded and reasonably comfortable.
These are made out of webbing and have 2 loops. A large one for your foot and a smaller one to be attached to the rope you're hanging from. You have 2 circus loops, 1 for each foot. I'd be very interested to see Ken's seat belt idea. Wouldn't want to just try it before seeing it. On a similar note, what do you guys use to winch you up for an SSJ?

It was David Deval who first put my interest towards webbing, think it was mentioned in one of his books.
I purchased and used an ex BT Cherry Picker as the hoist, cost me £4500, used it for three seasons and sold it on for £5795. Tried an electric winch but was far too slow both up and down. Ken. |

I was thinking of doing it with a full harness for safety purposes and I also assumed it would be a little more comfortable as well.

There are advantages and disadvantages to each piece of equipment. You need to work with both, to find your own preferences.

Circus loops are great and efficient but take a while to build up to.
Amspecinc.com sells stunt equipment for the industry and have some 6" rated and padded ankle supports that are perfect. http://www.amspecinc.com/products/Access......p?id=214

I use a body harness and love it! Its light weight, doesn't interfere with clothes, etc., the excess loops are simply held to my legs by rubber bands until I'm ready to use them. I can hang upside longer without discomfort and can do a second show without effort. Additionally, it looks like I'm hanging from my ankles since all you see are the loops.
Problem is, if you want one you have to make it. We've discussed before the liability problems with selling it as a product. If you are interested, PM me and I'll give you a link to a pic so that you can see how to design one. Caution however, make certain a person experienced with such items sews it for you. Clyde |

I used a body harness for a while, and it enabled me to tell a slightly different kind of story.
It looked as if each of my ankles was tied to a rope. I'd escape the SJ, and all of a sudden, one leg would break free. A few moments of panic, trying to grab the remaining rope, and then that leg broke free, and I flipped around, hanging right side up. At 100', the audience couldn't see any of the things I didn't want them to see. Their gasps were quite gratifying. And the way I rigged it, I could do most of the set-up in front of them.
