I found an ungimmicked version of this in practical encyclopedia of magic. Anyone know if that is any good?

"Does anyone know a good way of folding the silk to make it look real? Every time I see anyone do it, it looks just like what it is... a rolled up silk."
I think it was Professor Spellbinder from The Magic Nook who suggested adding a few real or artificial petals in as you roll the silk. Wonderful idea - I found some artificial roses with petals just a touch more maroon than the red silk I use and it looks so much more realistic. |

That's a great idea actually. Spellbinder is full of them.
I used to add red glitter as I prepared the silk, looks nice if your in a spotlight on stage. On rose to silk.. I always thought this looked exactly like what it was, even when seeing really famous magicians do it. Then I think, its not supposed to be an incredible trick, just a nice touch that is better than pulling a silk from your pocket. I used Tony Clark's gimmick for awhile, but I haven't done this trick that way in awhile. Lately, the way I do this is to roll a silk and stick it inside a fake rose bud made of rolled up flashpaper (Red sharpie helps!) Leave a tail out of the silk at the bottom. You grab the tail and light the flashpaper fake rosebud while snapping the silk out.You burn the silk a bit sometimes but see Bob for inexpensive silks. To me, its worth it if it looks so much better than a regular silk to rose. This beats regular silk to rose by a longshot, and doesn't cost much. Like Bob says, SCHEME. Steven |

I find as I go through magic text and videos that there is a number of version or ways to accomplish this effect. Shamada explains his on his videos from Stevens Magic. There are one in the old Encyclopedia of Dove Magic by Supreme and others that have appeared in Magic Magazines.
If you like the idea of Rose changing to a hanky, then find one that is suitable to your clothing and act perimeters. I agree, it is a nice little transition effect, eventually not to everyone liking. Do you know Roses come in other colors besides Red and White, they come in Pink, Blue; Yellow and the florist will add color to change the color to whatever you want for a real rose, even Black. |

As all of you see I post this in August when I received my very well made Nielsen GImmick...TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY THAT I USE IT!!!
I do with a red silk, and follow the instructions of Shimada in the video. Is not a WOW thing in my silk act, BUT is a nice sublety. Is on the bussiness now the rose to silk! My best, Hansel!

After seeing this post, I searched on the AskAlexander forum and found a Melbourne Christopher column in New Conjurer's Magazine that approached it from a completely different angle. Thanks, Bill |
