I got Impression a little while ago, and have been playing with it for quite some time now.
Some people on this board have asked why the card must be re-entered into the deck, before the final revelation. It doesn't have to be, but I performed it with out re-entering it into the deck and i find that the re-entering part really makes the effect more powerful from the lay persons point of view. I have also been playing with the principle behind the trick and have created some of my own effects from it, including a color changing deck etc. Overall it's a nice effect and worth the measly ten dollars. Agree.
Great effect. Specially for the price. |

Sometimes we have to be reminded that simplest is sometimes best. The principle has many different uses and it's quick to setup (I would say virtually impromptu, not quite totally). Maybe putting the card back in the deck adds some time misdirection to prevent a quick reconstruction by a spectator? It's really good.

Personally, I would rather buy Neil Tobin's Xpert over Impression. You get the same end result and it feels more natural.

It seems to me with Xpert, you have to mix the cards into the deck, which you do NOT have to do with Impression. Then again I'm not sure if you do, but I take it from XPerts description of the X-ed Card. With impression, you can just flip over the card. Could you also do that with ANY deck almost impromptu? Can the back be signed instead of X-ed?
This is nothing against XPERT, I'm just voicing my opinion on the points you made. Well, you did make a valid point, the end result is the same. Well, if the end result is the same without using a device, then that speaks for itself! Ive had great luck with Impression. SO simple, so great!

True, you do have to mix the cards back in the deck, but it's well justified. It also cant be signed, but placeing a x on the back has never been questioned. No, the xpert is not impromptu but almost. The real selling point is when I asked people what they thought, some of them were able to guess how Impression was done. No one had any clue how it was done with the Xpert.

I want to thank Madmonk for being such an enthusiastic owner of The XPERT. But in all fairness to Yousif, I must say that comparing it with Impression isn't quite fair.
When you buy Impression, you are buying a single, strong routine that Yousif has cleverly built upon the brilliant thinking of Al Baker and Clayton Rawson. The XPERT, on the other hand, is an entirely new utility device that comes with FOUR strong, original routines (one of which bears a resemblance to the plot employed in Impression). And to the thinking performer, The XPERT device is even more than that: it opens up entire avenues of creative thought. So many, in fact, that I am currently starting work compiling a subsequent book of routines submitted by current satisfied users of The XPERT, including Larry Becker and Kenton Knepper. I hope this helps clear things up.

Hi,
I totally agree. Even when comparing, both routines are entirely different in thier own ways. Both have strong points. You just couldn't compare XPERT and Impression, both do basically different things. When I read the routine "X-ed Card", I thought they were almost entirely different, except for the climax. The methods incorporated with XPERT and Impression open doors for new tricks and thinking. Of course, both in thier own way. XPERT is a great tool, and kudos to you Neil for such great thinking. As for being caught, that cannot be used an excuse, as I could say that for any effect. I, have never been caught, and neither have others who use this as well. Thanks for the great comments guys. I appreciate the comment on the layout and packaging as well! Thanks Neil for clearing this up as well. |

I realize it's a while since this thread was active, but does anyone if someone still sells Impression?
Hocus Pocus has discontinued it and I haven't found it listed in the usual resources. Thanks - Ron |

Ron, check with Yousif, I am sure he will gladly sell you a copy. I know Magictricks.co.uk once had it, so I am not sure if they still do.

Hi,
Thanks for the interest. MagicTricks.co.uk I think is the only dealer that still carries this effect. I still have a few copies left if anyone is interested in them for a good price. Hi MattisX, Im glad you like the concept though, that my trick and boomerang share. Have fun with it! Yousif |

First off Yousif, yes Chris at Magic Smith still owns the store (was there a few weeks ago). He has chosen to carry and produce only his line of effects via http://www.Magicsmith.com
Yousif has been kind enough to send me a copy. All I have to say is WHY didn't *I* think of this! It is simple, straight forward, and devastating - if used wisely. Personally this is what I call a "bare bone" effect. It allows the performer to customize the effect to his or her own style, making the impact much more effective than just reciting lines. I performed it for the desk clerk while I was out of town. What I did was hand him the deck of cards, and had him open the deck. I don't want to expose too much here, but I had him do all the work. When he was done I had him put the cards in the case, to illustrate at no time did I touch the cards. For those who have it will know what happened. Needless to say he was TOTALLY amazed! He insisted I show his boss the next morning. Great reaction for such a nice little item! Thank you Yousif!!!
Your choices in life can be compared to watching a magic trick: You can continue to believe the illusion in front of you, find the intrigue and desire to learn more, or quit paying attention the moment you feel deceived.

Hi David,
Sorry, I should have been more clear in my post. What I meant was they don't have the full retail shop they once had. Too bad, they were a GREAT shop! But they do still offer great items! Thanks for the review. Im glad you like it! Regards, Yousif |
