I know a LOT of people very certain about Bigfoot, God, Atlantis, Aliens and lots of other things. Not sure your theory holds water John.

Oh and I think it is Bigfoot and the Aliens that cause global cooling AND warming. Jerks they are.

I said should. It's not a theory, it's an ethical and epistemological stance.

Yeah....and it is all the US' fault, that is why all manufacturing should be in China and India, they have old cultures that are good and thus don't pollute.

Point made. If we're going to have corporate hypocrisy, at least keep it IN the country so the Chinese won't be eating our lunch.

Believe me, companies in the US and many other contries have, for decades, made efforts to work cleaner and it has made the air better than it was in the 50s. If the Chinese could keep the pollution there it wouldn't be so bad, but the stuff floats around the planet.

Indeed you said SHOULD sir. But it was a great way to work Bigfoot, Atlantis, and Aliens into a conversation you gotta admit!

Global warming is the political flavor of the week.

Years ago it was the global cooling scare. Then it was the hole in the o-zone scare. Then it became global warming. Now that theory is about up, so they're starting to call it climate change.

Is California still floating off into the ocean? Maybe there's truth to that one, I don't know. Just haven't heard much about it lately. A few years back that was a big deal.

There will always be something like this for radical groups to be freaked out about.

I'm not suggesting we don't take care of our environment - far from it.

I think part of the problem here is that most people will not act unless shaken out of their own little boxes. They need to be frightened into action. Sad but pretty true on a lot of levels.

Why would most care about something so much bigger than themself? Most of this country has never traveled outside their own town.

Politicians long ago figured out they need to scare people to action. It is the quickest way, and you really don't need too many facts to do it with either.

Don't lies and disinformation sort of defeat the purpose of democracy?

True. The problem, though, lies in figuring out who- if anyone- is telling the truth, and who's lying.

In this thread, I am reminded of the ever-pithy Sam Harris:

"I have often thought that if God had wanted us to understand the difference between having good reasons for what one believes, and having bad ones, He would have made this difference intelligible to everyone."

It's remarkable that so many people don't understand why so many scientists are so concerned about climate change (whatever the reasons for it are) it is perhaps, because most people don't understand that science is not democratic. It doesn't matter how many people BELIEVE in an hypothesis, what matters is the evidential basis for it.

Many people have their heads stuck in the sand about the prospect of a planet several degrees warmer and with a population of 9 billion people. It's not going to be pretty...
