I have been performing magic for a few years on a small level. Card tricks, etc. I would like to step it up and start to get into stage illusions and possibly create a stage show. Question, what is a proprietary illusion? I was reading about it on here and was wondering exactly what it is. Is it illegal to create and perform illusions that have been done with some variation? How do you know which illusions you can create and perform.
Any help would be great. Thanks. |

This has been discussed many times here on the Café. There is an old list that was compiled online. I'm sure someone will post it below.

Simply, proprietary illusion is an illusion propietary to a certain performer or designer. You could also call it an exclusive illusion. It could also be a more common illusion, with certain feature(s), addition or routining exclusive to a performer (like Klok's spiker). The word "proprietary" means something is exclusive to someone.

Is it illegal to create and perform illusions that have been done with some variation? Pretty much all illusions that exist are variations of certain basic effects (like vanish, appearence, levitation, penetration, mutilation, transposition) so in broader sense, no. However, its not always that simple and really should be evaluated when creating something. Also, there is the issue of legal versus ethical. Something may well be legal but not ethical. You will see that most of us here are very concerned by ethics. We have a lot of people with great knowledge here, so you can always ask-and you should.

You might want to look at this website:
http://www.magicauction.com/IllusionHotl......ghts.htm It is a "Who Owns the Rights" listing with an explanation. Here is another good list of resources and information on proprietary rights: http://www.zigmont.com/backstage.html :magicrabbit: |
