I am a new member to the IBM and I would like to join the ring 2100. I sent an email to the address provided in the membership program and benefit book about a week ago and I haven't gotten a reponse. Does anyone know if the email address provided is still active? thanks

The address is ringadmin@ring2100.org
It goes directly to me, and as far as I can tell I haven't received anything from you yet.

Thanks to the forsight of Gary Plants as well as his generosity I now have almost all of the messages posted on MAGIC! The Global Magicians Network, the historic Magicians Only BBS and birthplace of Ring 2100 that existed before the WWW got going.
As many of you know, many years ago I licensed the message base and the logo from the creator, David Lichtman, and have them online at http://mfbtw.com to preserve this unique bit of magic history. For those that don't know the participants read like a who's who in Magic at the time and way too many to name. Today I added 2000 more messages to the archive and will add messages every week probably on Sundays. The new archived messages will be designated with (NEW). Thank you Gary for following through and for being my friend all these years. For MAGIC!, -=tabman

Thanks for keeping these messages alive. I've enjoyed reading the archives in the past. I thought the rest of them were lost for good. Time to start reading again.

We now have files online up to #25 (each file contains 500 messages) and I have now up to #179 with few gaps.
This should tell the tale hopefully. -=tab

What a great resource.
Wouldn't it be great if they continued to post on the current 2100. Harris

It would be but that was a long time ago and I doubt we'll ever see that level of comradery again. There was nothing else. The Spider Network was online but Richard discouraged messaging. It was a great time to be in Magic and on MAGIC!.
http://mfbtw.com I'll make an effort to get another thousand messages up tonight but when I start working on the site I start reading and lose track of time. Thanks again. -=tab

Those were good times. Big phone bills, but good nevertheless.
Few of the people Tabby listed were actually Ring 2100 participants. Here's a list of the original charter members of Ring 2100, Max Abrams Pete Biro Anthony Blake Jerry Burton Stephen Cabral Tabby Crabb Dave Knapp David Lichtman Jon Lucke Stacey MacKenzie David Luther Glen McFerren Geno Munari Jim Nagel Charlie Randall Keith Raygor John Scanlan Bruce Sandercock Lee Thompson David VanVranken Bill Wells Lesley V. J. Manning Since Ring2100 was a subset of the MAGIC! membership, only MAGIC! members could participate. This became an issue when one of our members got banned from the MAGIC! site and thus was restricted from participating in Ring 2100. That was one of the reasons we felt the need to break away and find an independent communication medium. We had to find a method that would be endorsed by IBM without indirectly endorsing a third party provider (MAGIC!). Remember, these were the days before the internet became popular, so it was a rather difficult task. We've gone through a few iterations, and what we have now seems to satisfy our members (now up to around 900 or so IBM members)

The story of Ring 2100 is in the later message base. I was looking through some of them last night but it will be awhile b4 I get to those particular ones as they are pretty late in the game and Im just on group #30. I think the story of 2100 is up around 165 to 170. Each group contains 500 messages.
That banned member. Is he still active today? Ive often wondered what happened to him. He wa a likable guy, and tall too if I remember right. That ties in with some of the story from my book Tabman Magic. I remember when the five of us elected you president for life. I believe the group shown on http://mfbtw.com is the actual group of Ring 2100 Board Members who did it. The picture was taken at the Lance Burton Show I think at the Hacienda by the shows photographer. We all got a blow up. Do you have yours (DaveV)? and can you scan it and email it to me? Id like to get a better pic up there and my copy is packed away in a barn that flooded. I don't want to even open the box. Anyway, Im glad to see the ring has grown to 900 members and our ideas all panned out for the future; now the present and I sent you the actual paper charter a few months ago for safe keeping. I can no long afford the IBM annual dues or Id still be a member but I used to be a part of the Annual convention and the beginnings of the Ring so I thought I'd let yall know. -=tabman

No, haven't heard from him since. I wish I had that picture too. I don't remember now if I paid to get a copy or not. I haven't heard from Burt either since that meeting. Funny, I don't see his name on the charter. I think that was taken during one of our MAGIC! get togethers during the old "Desert Magic Seminar" days. I think you're right that it was at the Hacienda (long since imploded). That's also where I took that shot of you peering through the rails of your card guillotine.
The charter is now safely on display behind glass in my home office (second floor, little chance of flooding)

Burt went through some changes. He's still in LA area. I hear from him every few months and I think I recall him ordering Tabman Magic.

Question: Is the Ring2100 subforum in your files? Being a "hidden" group I didn't know if you had access to them.

To give these archives some reference of time, the latest addition (37) covers the three big conventions for the year 1991, IBM SAM and FISM. I think that year's FISM is when Lennart Green had his problems with the judges not believing what he was doing was real.
This archive is a great peek into the magic of that decade.

All the messages Im posting now came from Gary Plants archives and through his generosity and foresight in hanging onto them. I don't think the Ring 2100 files are part of it. Did we get the Charter at the Baltimore convention?? I think it was but will have to look. Jim Nagel took over a Baltimore and I know he signed the charter.

I think it was issued in 1993 in Canada, possibly in Quebec (I thought it was in Toronto) but I can't find any online IBM history to check out past convention locations. According to the timeline, Jim Nagel would have been the outgoing President when he issued us the charter.

What's the date on the charter??? Never in Toronto. The convention was in Quebec City. That would have been right. My first convention as hotel shows director was Baltimore and Dave Lichtman came east for the presentation of the charter Im pretty sure and that was 1991.
Here's a link to the Charter online: http://questx.com/magic!/charter.html
