Guys, a little help please. How do I take a pic that's 640 X 480 pixels and 136KB, keep the pixel size but lessen the KB to under 100KB? I've looked everywhere but I can't find the Windows command where you can change the dpi thereby lowering the KB size. All I can seem to find are the commands where the pic size is changed to 3 or 4 common web sizes (thumbnail, email, 640/480, etc.), but this doesn't also allow me to specify the dpi count. I need to do both. Optimal would be 640/480 and 90KB (60/65dpi?) per pic.

Too bad you don't have Photoshop. I got the starter edition as free bonus software with a printer I bought.

I thought that it wasn't dpi but the amount of jpg compression. A fast search for online free photo optimization will give you several choices.

Its a JPG picture, right? You could-if you have the right software-change the compression so it takes less space (though quality suffers).

Quality is not the issue right now. Right now I need to find a program that will allow the User to choose the image size AND the image dpi rating. I would prefer something more specific than ratings such as "good, better, best", or "small, bigger, biggest"; I would prefer being able to select specific dpi ratings. (Ross's suggestion worked for a test pic, but for some reason it won't download to my computer.)
I am not looking for anything complicated; the simpler the better! It doesn't have to be a free download, so let's hear about what you got even if it costs. |

Also, it doesn't have to be software if you can show me how to do this with a Windows program.

http://www.irfanview.com Irfanview is free software that I use all the time. Once you install the program and open the file... got to "image" on the menu, the select "resize/resample" from here you can play with the resolution and file size. Very easy to use. I learned to use this program in about 10 minutes.

Thanks Cliff, that's perfect! That's exactly what I was looking for! 640/480 and 65dpi comes to 90KB exactly.
Question: Do you know if it can convert several pix at once, or just one at a time? (It's not a deal breaker, just that I'll be converting about 30 pix a day and was wondering about shortcuts.) perfect...perfect...perfect |

Chance,
Go to "File → Start batch dialog with selected files…" and you'll be able to work out the rest.
