What are some good books to help me put together a good magic show? I am looking for something that explains good routining, time for effects, pantomime vs. speaking, etc. I have "The Creative Magician's Handbook." What else is there to help put together a good parlour or stage show? Thank you.

A real good book in my opinion is Henning Nelms' "Magic and Showmanship". I think every magician, whether a beginner or seasoned pro, should have this book. Smile

Amateur Magician's Handbook may be helpful to you as well.

The Chavez course (I think Dale Salwak still teaches it on the West Coast) is pretty good if you want to do stage manip, though it does have its limitations.

Attending one of vito Lupo's workshops would be HUGELY helpful in this regard.

And I've heard good things about McBride's Mystery School sessions, though I've never been.

I do a lecture on how to create original magic, but I could never find a really comprehensive resource on it, book or otherwise, so I created one. It's a home study course on creating your own magic act. There's a description of it on my website if you're interested:

I'm sure there must be some other good sources out there too. Have you tried a search on the internet?

Good luck,

Mitch Williams

P.S. Send me an email if you'd like, charlatan, I'll help point you in the right directions if I can: mitchmajik@aol.com

The Fitzkee trilogy of books is a must for any serious performer. Absolutely wonder books and a wqealth of knowledge. I also like the Tommy Wonder books as he dsicusses some great topics in depth like the chapter on misdirection.

The Fitzkee books should belong in everyone's library. I know that Denny Haney of denny and Lee magic carries the complete set.

charlatan, I have Henry Hay's Amateur Magicians Handbook, 4th ed. Very good resource I believe, as it contains not only good effects from cards to coins, but also good tips in staging a show as well.

You may obtain a cheap copy from used books on the net.

All the best!
