I use a handheld microphone with a mic stand OR gimcrack mic holder.
But IMHO using a handheld mic should be learned properly. Look at how Bergen or Dunham use mic on a stand. The mic doesn't hide the mouth and the face of the vent. That's why they are masters. For me it is annoying to see vents performing with the microphone HIDING their mouth. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETTGYCLWGQU&NR=1 What do you think? I agree; the performer looks like a puppeteer hiding behind the mic. I prefer a wireless head mike, but some clubs where I work have only mic on a stand. You just have to stand back a little; it will still pick you up.
Here's a little tip I learned doing comedy clubs. Most of the other performers (stand-ups) take the mic right off the stand. They seldom adjust the stand. So before the show I set the mic stand at the right height for me, and it's usually right there when I'm on, no matter where in the show I'm performing. Bob |

Bob, as much as I want to use a head mic or ear mic, I cannot because of my tapes-over-mouth act. I don't have a problem with the mic stand height in the beginning because I usually enter alone without my figures and I can adjust it while saying my intro spiels.
Or I just use the gimcrack mic holder and everything is perfect. |

I'm guilty of that, and yes, I use it as a crutch. When I started, it was an effort to take focus off my lips. Now it isn't required, but it makes me feel more comfortable. I pop out every now and then so the audience can see I have control, then go back.
I look at Pete Michaels, who does the same thing - and he uses a huge microphone. Like it or not, the method is used by a number of performers. |

Yes...I think hiding behind the mic is not really nice so a headworn mic or earset mic would be perfect.
In case an earset mic cant be used...and a handheld mic with a mic stand is the only option, hiding behind the mic during those hard labials won't hurt.

I think the mic on stand is too limiting for my own head movement. Just my personal preference. Tom: You are an excellent vent. (I have your DVD!) No need to hide behind the mic! Bob |

Bob:
I also use lavalier mics from time to time. But, again, handheld mics are my priority. Tom: I agree with Bob. I've seen your videos. You're a good performer--and too good-looking to hide your face behind the mic! |

Tom...I agree with Bob and Ony about the good looks.
But hiding the mic behind some hard labials is practically a vent technique. Of course I'm not saying a vent should hide during the entire act...
