During the Christmas holiday of 1978, BBC television aired “The Dick Cavett Magic Show”. Appearing on this show was the Legendary Slydini. His performance consisted on “The Paper Balls in The Box” and “The Paper Balls Over The Head”. After watching this special, I thought to myself, “It would be great to meet this master of magic”. Be careful what you wish for, in a few short years, I would be sat in Slydini’s living room receiving personal tuition from the master and my greatest inspiration in magic.
I would love to hear form other Slydini student out there. Mike

Hi Michael... nice to see you here. Yes, I was inspired greatly by Slydini. Took lessons and really got into the coins thru table. We became good friends and I still remember having dinner at his NY Apartment with Persi Diaconis. Slydini was a great cook too.
Since I didn't smoke, I didn't get into his cigarette work, but really admired it. I used the principle's of his work for other applications.

Hello Pete
Lovely to see you here. I appreciate you sharing your experience about Slydini. I loved Tony dearly, he was very kind to me and set me on the path. Spent four days in his company and never saw him again. He marked me for life. His "Gold Pins" routine is real magic and I still perform his "Knotted Silks" exactly as he taught me. I hope to hear from other Slydini students Thanks Mike

I had the chance to sit with Slydini in the coffee shop of the now no longer even standing New Frontier Hotel Casino in March of 1982 sitting at the table as well were Alan Alan, My good friend Steve Pellegrino, and two other British magicians. Slydini showed us many of of his routines. It wasn't a magic effect that I remember most but it was a a learning experience none the less.
Slydini did the old mime bit of pulling a thread from Alan Alan's neck tie. Then (All in mime) Slydini taking a sewing needle from his lapel and attempting to thread the needle, and sew the thread back into Alan's tie. At times we could have sworn we seen the thread, seen the needle glistening from the lights in the coffee shop. But the fact was we really didn't see anything but empty space where the objects should have been in Slydini's hands. This really brought home to me how important it is to believe in what you are doing as a magician. Slydini really believed he had a needle and thread. This showed in his performance of this bit of mime and in every effect he did. Randy |

I sent a photo of you, Cellini and Charlie Chambra to your Facebook. I took it at FISM in Stockholm. You guys were all 'Slydini Graduate Students'. Cheers and thanks for all the good stuff you are offering us here this week! "JR" Fly Navy |

Another point where we meet. After leaving London in 1976, I went to live in New York. Fred Robinson had written 3 letters of introduction for me. One to Herb Zarrow, one to Derek Dingle and one to Tony Slydini. For almost a year, twice a week, I would skip lunch and take lessons from Tony. He gave me as a souvenir one of the sort of double shafts that he had done himself to keep his coins (a cheap thing in physical terms but a treasure to me). What an interesting man! I learned fundamental things from him even if it took me years to unlearn certain provocative attitudes without unlearning his misdirection teaching, body weight language, human binary rhythm of attention (a theory that I kept on deepening all along my life).
The trick of his that I preferred was the helicopter card. I did build my own version but I don't really dare performing it by fear that he would not agree with the changes. As you know Tony had a very set mind about how things should be done. After all these years I wouldn't do something he might disapprove even if I stongly feel that it's a real improvement: so I don't work on his tricks. Like you however I use every bit of misdirection and audience management that I learned from him and later commingled with Arturo Ascanio (in transit actions), Fred Kaps (use of feints) and Tommy Wonder (concentrating the audience focus). ... and then I read a bit ... and lately revisited his work in print. The first chapters of Karl Fulves' books "the magic of Slydini and beyond" are the ones which talk to me the most. Rich Barlotta in Slydini Master of Misdirection is also reviving very sweet memories of Tony. A rigorous, self disciplined man with a great heart: I miss being able to give him a call for asking him for advice.

One of the first lectures I went to was given by Slydidni, It was the early 70s in San Francico, The fee was $10.00 which for me at that time was real money. I did not know much about Slydini at the time, but needles to see that was the best ten dollars I ever spent on Magic.

Hello Mr Vincent
I am french and I didn't know your work and style but I've checked Youtube and have found you great and doing beautiful routines. Congratulations ! Then I've read that Tony Slydini was your greatest inspiration and it made me feeling like to know more about you, which I've found in this very interesting 'special guest of honor' forum. From my mother side my family came from Argentina and Tony Slydini always makes me think about my grand father and uncles, who are gone now like him, in his manners and kind of smiling, talking or joking; plus I appreciate so much his magic that I'm really fascinated by this man; his grace, his science of human nature, his force. Another point is the fact that he starts from a really low condition and reach the top, becoming a legend. He'll always stay my favourite artist of all times for ever. So when I am able to read things about him from the lucky men who had the chance to study with him, it's always a great pleasure for me. I would give anything if it was still possible to hear him shouting at me when I do the 6 coins through the table in a way that he surely have found horrible even if I try to stay as close as possible as his original one. (I only do the first part with the english penny and 6 mexican pesos coins that I got from Ron's Auction who say they came from Slydini). So thanks to you for begining one of your first post with his evocation and thanks to all the Slydini students who have stories they share. Keep on doing good stuff and please come to France for a lecture if it's possible. Friendly Chronica (Ch. Moreno) |

Dear Chronica
Thank you for your post. I cannot put into words what it meant to me to meet Slydini in person. It was a humbling moment for me and yet a big thrill. His magic was beautiful to watch and experience. Slydini the man was a perfectionist and pushed me hard to understand his teachings, which I eventually did. My friend Jim Cellini helped me to gain a further understanding of Slydini's work. I am inspired to know that Slydini's magic is still inspiring people around the world. The great masters don't die, they live on inside of us. It is our responsibility to ensure that the teachings and message is passed on to the next generation. Thank you Mike Click here to view attached image.
