It was a privilege to appear on Channel Four’s "Heroes of Magic", in 2000.
I was asked to talk about my magical idols Slydini and Fred Kaps. I first saw Fred Kaps on The Michael Parkinson Show back in the early 1970s, he was sensational. Fred Kaps was my role model for excellence in the craft and what could be achieved with technical mastery. More significantly, he inspired me to combine superlative technique with great narrative, story telling and artistic presentation. In the following video clip, he is presenting the classic effect known as “The Homing Card”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMjxkHM-hQM&feature=related I have seen many magicians attempt this effect, no one and I mean no magician since has managed to re-create the perversity of a magician in trouble as brilliantly as Fred Kaps. Beneath the facade of a magician in trouble is a great technical master at work, not just in his handling, but also his pantomiming, acting and communication with the audience. This was one of Fred Kaps’s last performances on British television, he died shortly after. The magic world lost one of it’s favorite sons. After Channing Pollock and Cardini, along came Fred Kaps to continue the chain of excellence. Please share your thoughts on Fred Kaps. Thanks Mike

He is my role model.
Fred Kaps confident friend Eddy Taytelbaum (Fism winner) is living in Amsterdam, Holland and I do have some contact with Eddy for several years. He have told many interesting stories about the great Fred Kaps. In scandinavia Fred Kaps was a big name among the magicians, sure. Many magicians did copy his style and his effects. Pretty funny, before I know about Fred Kaps I didn't know that his style was copied by others. Now I know & understand that many was/is his copycats! |

Fred was a gentleman's gentleman. Always classy, always someone you could be with under any circumstances. He was a great family man. I enjoyed many visits to his home and dinners with his family. You were treated like royalty. Fred could perform for royalty as well as folks on the street.
In my 50+ years of magic never met anyone like him. I sure have missed him, but learned a lot from being with him.
