For the past few years I have been trying to get hold of an Appearing Wand.
The only information I have got is that such a prop USED to be available but disappeared from the market. Can any of you folks enlighten me further? I find it strange that such an obvious 'opener' should have vanished so completely!

You might try Ebay, I see them there sometimes.

In today's lawsuit happy environment appearing metal canes are a liability to their manufacturer. There is a small chance the item could hurt the mage or worse, fly from his had and into the audience.
They often pop up at magic estate sales. Tom Cutts |

Hi Wallace!
Try getting a hold of, "Fantasio Products" through a popular dealer! I think this will be your answer to finding one! Hope this helps! Steve Landavazo

I'm afraid that the only Fantasio item I've come across to date is his Vanishing Wand, although I don't see why he can't offer an 'appearing' one, after all he does manufacture an 'appearing ' cane!
I understand that a METAL wand was actually made in the past but it seems to have become a 'collectors item', I can't see why!!

Thanks Bengi, that seems to be exactly what I've been looking for!
Have you done business with the company? I am always a bit wary as I live in Northern Ireland and normally only order from US sites that have been recommended!

I've done business with them from time to time...I have never had any trouble with them, so guess they must be ok.

Metal appearing wands CAN be a bit fragile, more so than the canes for some reason.
My big complaint is that, at the short length, the taper is obvious and, therefore, so is the method. Why not use a regular (whatever that is!) wand as in a purse frame production? For years, I opened my show with a wand production -- ungimmicked. It’s flashy, it’s magical, and right away it lets the audience know what the show is all about. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Hey Peter, you're taking me back 50+ years!
I used that twist way back but it meant, for me anyway, using it at the start!! BTW Bengi your clown guys haven't replied to my query! Ah well, back to the 'drawing board'!!

Yes, that is one drawback -- it has to be used at or near the beginning.
But, on the up-side, the wand doesn't look "strange" (well, as not-strange as a wand CAN look), it's cheaper, and it works every time. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

Wallace, Peter, I don’t think that the “Wand from Purse” has to be done as the opener or even near the beginning of the show. It can be done anytime in the act. Put the wand in your inside coat pocket or make a little felt holder and pin it where you want it (easy to get that is). Put the coin purse on top of it (you know the bit, slit bottom).
Any time you want to produce the wand, reach into the jacket as though you are taking something from the pocket. In reality pivoting the purse and the wand into the waiting left hand at the edge of the jacket. Pivot the purse forward a few inches, open it with the right hand and slowly withdraw the wand (the bottom of the wand is hidden behind the left sleeve. When the wand has cleared the pocket and jacket, slowly move both hands forward so that it is well away from the body when the wand is finally removed from the purse. Snap the purse shut and tap the frame with the wand to demonstrate its solidity. Put the purse away (or toss it on the table to be used in another effect, you could keep coins in it ready for a coins across or matrix routine, perhaps a couple of sponge balls or what ever). Use the wand to do “flip-stick” and other wand centered effects. I agree with Wallace that this is not as “flashy” as an instantly appearing wand or silk to wand. Still, it is the magical and impossible production of a wand. So guy’s what do you think? By the way Benji, thanks for the web site! I have found a couple of items that aren’t around standard magic web sites or magic dealers.

Naturally, I use my spring wand in children's shows, along with a bunch of other gag wands.
But the spring -- or droopy -- wand is the one gag wand I also use in adult shows. About halfway through the show, when I've got a good read on the audience, I select a female volunteer -- one who has been enjoying herself but not trying to dominate the room. In the course of whatever, I hand her the spring wand to "do the magic". Then I step back and SHUT UP. Because there is nothing -- absolutely nothing -- that I can do or say that will be as funny as what the female volunteer will do or say with the wand (if you have been able to pick the right person). Don't interrupt her, until you see the audience is starting to tire of the gag and certainly before she gets embarrassed. It's a wonderful prop that takes up virtually no space and plays BIG. cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

I've been using the "Wand From Change Purse" as the beginning of my Flipstick routine. Gene Anderson has an excellent write-up of the method in his lecture notes.

Thanks for your advice Bengii. I have since contacted FCM and purchased a Metal Appearing Wand. I works well. It took quite a bit of cleaning initially to stop my hands going black but now it's working fine.
Although it looks tapered, as pointed out, I have found that people are so suprised they just don't notice and if you're on stage it's not a problem at all. FCM were very helpful and professional. I live in Australia, which is a good test for any supplier, and everything went smoothly, even a few extra tips were provided. |
