English, Afrikaans (grew up in South Africa), Mandarin (living in Taiwan now) a little Portuguese (Spent 3 months in Brazil) and the odd few words in another few languages most notable Taiwanese which is not the official language of Taiwan.
Most difficult in my opinion = Chinese character writing |

It's still good enough for me to do Sudoku puzzles in it. Number 38 is going to be an obscure, south-eastern dialect of the Mohenjo-Daro people. It will be a challenge. But I think I'm up to it. I'm not 100% certain, of course. It's not like I'm arrogant or something. |

I speak a smattering of German.
I would like to get back to it and gain some fluency. Other languages I'd like to look into would be Spanish, Portugese, conversational Russian, Japanese and Hindi.

I just found out about two minutes ago that I lost another friend to cancer.
The only other language I would like to speak would be one that heals people. Forget Linear A. I'm bummed. Seriously bummed. |

I am so sorry Jeff!
I love how much the Magic Café is a place where someone can say something that personal to friends and have such a warming and positive response.

I would like to say something important, and then I'll try to steer the thread back on topic.
Regarding the death of my friend with cancer, I was mistaken. I misinterpreted a Facebook message to mean that her fight was over, but it wasn't. Still, she is dying, and there really isn't any hope that any of us can see. It's just a matter of time. So I'm less sad, but sad nonetheless. Here is the something important: please allow me to remind all of you that at least two Café members are fighting cancer. For them, there is still hope (one of them has been cancer free since finishing chemo), and both of them need our brotherly words of encouragement and...yes...(dare I say it? is it allowed? does this violate the religion and politics rule? )...our prayers as well. For those of you who aren't aware of it, there's a special forum here at the Café for this kind of discussion: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewf......=61&4915 Nuff said on that. On topic: I think that Americans are often naive regarding foreign languages. There exists a tendency to associate speaking foreign languages with intelligence. Aber...contraire: speaking two or even three languages is de rigueur in many parts of the world. The American Weltanschauung is sometimes narrower than it ought to be. |

It is often difficult to speak more than one language in most of North America. Outside of Quebec and some of the US-Mexico border regions, most of this continent is solidly unilingual.

That's true only for public intercourse. At home, something like 1 out of 4 people in the US speak a language other than English. I forget the exact figure. I think I'll try to look it up. It'd be better than cleaning the kitchen.
[EDIT] OK, I looked it up. Here: http://www.census.gov/population/www/socdemo/lang_use.html The figure was a bit less than 1 in 5 in 2000. The report is worth looking at. The most spoken language after English and Spanish is...Chinese. |

I used to know a lot of Cree sign language. When I was working in nursing homes I had a patient who only spoke Cree so I learned enough to explain his treatment to him. Forgot most of it though.
