Yesterday when busking in a park I did some magic for a little girl. I opened my previously empty hand and produced a plastic frog. How about that!! I said a bit "von oben".
She looked at me and dismissed me with: " Pffft...you are just doing magic." I love performing magic for kids.

When busking, NEVER PERFORM JUST FOR KIDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
should be a rule of any serious busker. Kids do not have any money any way, they are not going to tip. If you are lucky maybe a parent will give you $1.00 for a few minutes of baby sitting. I only use kids to get the parents. they are the ones who is gonna pay, play to them. |

Stellan's child may have had some paying adult/s with her; he didn't say one way or the other. And what Ray says is generally true about children not paying of themselves, though I do find some earli-teens who do.
The presentation makes the magic.

In his post he implies that he was playing to the kid and the kid was not impressed. Performing for kids is fine. however the streets is not the place to do it. they are sorter so the performance angles are horrible. you are more likly to get busted on somthing by a kid than an adult on the streets.

Make a child smile and the whole world will smile with you.

I don't know about this. If you want a parent to give you $10 or $20, make their kid lose their ****. Parents love watching their kids get all rapturous. Maybe it's a location thing, but from what I've seen, I stop the most people and get the biggest hats from playing off a child. It doesn't even have to be their own child, people love watching a kid go nuts. Like I said, YMMV, but for me kids are money in the bank.

Thank you Mario. Cellini was right when he said that. Few people seem to realize the real implications of this.
I was once doing a whole show around twenty minutes for a little girl on the street. I soon had a big crowd, they did not applaud, they were absolute silent and just looked at her and they were mesmerized not by my magic, but by her face and her eyes. People had tears in their eyes, and so had I. Because it was the most beautiful magic in this world. The hat? I don't remember and I don't care. In my first post I just wanted to share a wonderful line from a child.

Sure, make the kids smile...
Just don't perform FOR them. The difference here seems obvious to me, anyhow.

Kind of related, I thought I share any way.
Nice show today fat hat, but a short time after I had three kids I mean 3 bring me flowers. I mean bloody flowers. I looked at them and said "how the hell do you expect to pay the bloody rent with them hay. I know at the end of the month I will explain to the landlord that I like my flat hear are some flowers for it. OK, no I did not say that, their mum drooped me 10 bucks then they came back with flowers I mean flowers. I am touched, really. I think kids are fantastic, they are so creative, so excepting I love making a kid laugh. The biggest build in my show is when I make a kid a dog, lots of laughs and I mean my show grows to that shows max right before the finale. |

If you can make a kid or two the star of the show, I find the parents are very considerate when it comes to donation time
Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That'll teach you to keep your mouth shut.

There is a difference in "making a kid the star of the show, making a kid smile "
and playing to adults. So hear is the ? I pose to you. If you have three kids in front of you and the parents are 25 feet away sitting on a bench will you start. to build? For me absolutly not.... Only if the parents are there as well. If the parents are not engaged in the show They will not give a good tip even if you use a kid in the show. If you use a kid in the shoow and the parents and other adults are there to watch. then you will see people smile hear them laugh, Grow the size of the crowd, and increase the weight of your hat. there is a huge difference between the two. |

Ray, you are absolutely right, but you are missing the bigger picture.
Ok, so you will not show the three kids anything.

Then tell me what the bigger picture is.
My intent in going out is to keep a roof over my families head and keep them fed. to me that is the bigger picture. |

We all seem to have different perspectives on the bigger picture. That is something we have to gain. Money is always a part of it for the street performer, but sometimes pushing to hard for money can have the opposite effect.

Please, let me know about the bigger picture I am missing.
Over this past holliday weekend, I did the best I have ever done in a weekend. I really do not see "the opposite effect" in my hats. When it comes down to it, your hat is your only judge. It will never lie about your performance. |
