Luke, your idea of a music box is terrific, imagine an old empty box that was you great grand mothers, it used to work, but now it does not, it is just an empty box, perhaps her spirit will cause it to play something.
Rich,In short sleeves, a great job. Ron, MRM, always plugging your products,,,,CP is great, but ease up on the plug. |

Thanks...VcosNJ;Narendra;Luke;Shahid;Dave.
edh:All I can add is that we as performers of Instant Radio already know the origin of the sound. I believe it is quite different for a guest/spectator....they do not have said knowledge. Therefore, they are more apt not to key in on the exact origin. Of course it does help to use some methods that most of us are [or should be] aware of to help enhance the illusion. Also,IMO...this is the type of effect that should be brief and not overplayed.I like it as a finale or encore at tableside. This leaves them wanting you to do it again...but of course you will not[BIG SMILE]. Happy trails. Rich |

I tried to pm you but alas your box is full. I was not plugging cp but mentioning that I have a great routine for this radio. If anything my saying so can only enhance sales of this item. From the feedback I have received that has been the case Ron |

•What if you cut and scotchtaped some playing cards together so you could fold them into a box. If they touched the center of the Ace, the cube would play music.
•Put a slit down the center of a card and attach a bent paperclip that travels the slit like the needle on an old car radio dial. The spectator puts a small mark anywhere along the 'dial'. When the paper clip is slid over the mark by the Spectator, music plays...but only then. •Make a fake(or real) electrical diagram of a radio on stickum paper on your printer, about playing card size. Stick onto a card and trim. Attach (2) 12" strings that have small metal tips. Whenever the Spekky touches the two metal ends together,"making the connection", the diagram plays. •Will it work with a Mike in hand?...Use it if the Spectator has just done something stupid. Hold the mike up to their ear and everyone hears music. Should crack up an audience. •In a similar vein, it would be a pretty decent gag as a Blonde joke. Hold it up to their ear, music plays....
We dance an invisible dance to music they cannot hear.

I tried this with my niece as a gag at the beginning of a card trick during a family magic show. After I dumped the cards out of the box, I gave her the wand and asked her if she knew how to use it, so she could help with the card trick. She said she didn't know, so I said, "let's check. Here, just waive it over the box. Let's see if you can do something magical with the card box." She did. Then I said. "That's awesome! Very nice.... ummm, what did you do? It looks just the same." (turn it over and examine it). "Yeah, sorry, but I don't think anything happened." (open the box, music comes out, act shocked, repeat, have her do it, congratulate her on her skill and then go on with the card trick...)
Anyway, it turned into a fun bit of business, and the prop worked great. My niece seemed pretty happy and proud of herself, so I think this little effect is a definite plus to the show, and plan to keep using it.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

The only drawback that I see so far is that you have no control of what you will be hearing. It could be a commercial or the weather, news, etc. So it may be hard to do a routine where "music" will play.

In these hi-tech days, the other alternative can be of using a cell phone (ringer in OFF mode) with an FM radio & MP3 capability. The sound volume of a modern cell phone is quite good for the purpose. P.S. Of course you need to connect the iPod/ Cell phone output to the speaker.

Just ordered this, don't know if this has been suggested previously but could you take out the batteries from a regular radio then get it to play.

Also,so far in my limited experience with IR... it doesn't seem to matter whether music, talk,or even static is produced....you are producing sound...magically. I believe there may be a subtle upside to producing sound that is NOT perfectly clear. It may actually enhance the believability of the effect.Just my personal opinion. In one of my restaurants it actually picked up the music station that the restaurant was playing! Cool! Oh,Cardbiker, the Ghost Radio effect was mentioned....sounds like a great use for IR. Rich |

I actually like the fact (from a mentalist point of view) that you can get anything come out from the radio - I think it adds to it....i wouldnt want something too perfect and crisp all the time....
I'm still working on my routines, but ive found Instant Radio to be very reliable and of good quality... I've played around with the placement too...
I've asked to be banned

If need be, replace the connector with an appropriate one - easy for the DIYers.

Just checked out Ron's routine (see earlier in the thread). It's a fun, intentionally goofy routine with a few inexpensive props for sight gags for a stand up show. I think I'll probably use the radio as just a side gag to an existing routine, but if you want to make it the centerpiece and like slapstick, Ron's got some good ideas.

Thanks for the comments. The routine is my kind of magic, comedy.
I have other comedy routines for standard effects like nesting boxes (written up in the linking Ring a few years ago), the scorpion, light & heavy chest, coloring books (yes and in this routine nothing is said), Wolf's Hip Hop Magician, Chattering Teeth, and plumbers helper. Some use extra props some do not but all are comedy. The radio routine will add a lot of fun to any show and the instant radio will be a whole lot better than the original AM ink. Ron |
