For those looking to class up your standard Sharpie, I just picked up a stainless steel sharpie for $7. The inner workings are pure sharpie but the outer housing looks more like a classy pen. The package says refills are available. So when the ink runs out, just add a new refill to the steel casing.

Interesting... There were pen-style Sharpie covers (dubbed Sherpa) for sale at MAGIC Live!, but those were at least $30.

Hmmm. Why would folks want Sharpies to look anything other than a standard everyday Sharpie?

To make it look like a classy pen, so it actually looks as stylish as your suit when you're performing professionally.

I thought the same thing when I saw the Sherpa for sale at Magic Live for $35. I would never pay that much but I guess it really just depends on the audience you are performing for. I do 95% corporate work and perform for a lot of rich people. For those crowds, a classier marker is a nice touch and that is why I bought it. Necessary? Hardly....but I've paid a lot more for a lot less.

Those Sherpa pens look pretty sharp, IMO, and come in a pretty nice variety of colors and styles. Why pay the money? Well, why do some executives (and others) like classy pens to begin with? They're basically jewelry, like a nice watch, but there's nothing wrong with that. Cheap cups can be just as effective as expensive ones, but Gazzo himself has written a few lines about the psychology of investing in nice props.

If executives use Sharpies, do they use the real classy ones? Or the ones they get at Staples? Leave the classy pens for writing in the date in your calendar for your next corporate performance with this same company.

Have you seen the Sherpa pens? Take a look, if you haven't. They're basically a nice shell that can be used with any Sharpie. There would be no reason to use one if you were performing in street clothes, but the more conservative designs would go well with a suit. It's just a cosmetic detail, though, so if that's not a factor then save your money. But even Fitzke spoke to the importance of image and "sex appeal" in dress, mannerisms and props.

No different then "needing" that $500 watch or "needing" that expensive laptop bag, wallet, ring etc. There is a market for everything and for those that need or want them, more power to them. Like stated above, expensive pens sell and have been around a loooong time and I would have bet my last dollar that those early expensive pens would not sell. Oh, I would have lost that bet.

I picked up a few Sherpas for myself and liked them so much that I decided to add them to our site! They really are very nice. Some will ask why do you "need" this and to them I say why do we "need" things like Out To Dinner or Stockholder when a rubber band will work just fine?
I don't think it's about "need", it's simply about choice. You can see the styles we carry here: http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/?keywords=sh......search=1 |

Paul, well said. Like I stated, for those that want these type of things, more power to them. Me personally, I don't "need" the watches, rings, coach bags etc. You are correct, its all about choice, maybe need.

Are they necessary? Not really.
Will they make the magic better? Probably not, unless it helps by giving the performer highr self-esteem or something. Are they cool? Cool is something that only the individual can define. Do I appreciate emyers99 starting the post and MaxfieldsMagic providing the link so I can decide for myself? Yes.

I've been using mine since my original post and love it. The only thing I like better about the Sherpa is that when teh Sharpie dries out, you just throw in a new one whereas the SS sharpies need an insert. But for only $5, when the ink dries out, I just plan to toss it and buy a new one.
