I wish I could remember which vent I heard use it, but it went something like "As you know, ventriloquism is talking without moving the lips. Well people used to accuse me all the time of using a tape recorder or something to do the voice, so if you see my lips move now and then, it's to let you know it's really me."

I thought it was funny in an inside joke kind of way.
