Hi guys, I've been lurking here but now I have a question.
I'm a restaurant magician who is having trouble getting enough work in my area, because just about all the places I approch want me to work for them on kids night. Now I don't really have a problem with that, except that around here every restaurant has kids night on the same night. I'm a pretty popular guy on Tuesday but sadly underemployed the rest of the week. Right now I work two nights a month at a Beef O'Brady's and the other two at a Denny's. I just had to turn down more work because of the Tuesday restriction. Beef's wanted me to start working for them every week but I couldn't cut out my only other venue (besides, Denny's pays better). Does anyone have any advise on how to either try to convince some restaurants to either change their kids nights or to convince them that I'd be good to have around on other nights as well. I know most of the standard replies already so be a little creative, goodness knows I'm at an impass myself. |

Send a restaurant some promo material. It needs to have adult referenses in it. Offer a free night of services (maybe an houir or two). If they want their free night in Tues. Tell them you are already booked. Try and get the free night on another night. When they see how well you do they may consider a different night.
A restaurnt I do did not want me at first. They agrreed to a free night and then backed out. I convinced them to let me in one night for free. When it went well they were shocked and hired me. That was about five years ago. To convince them of a ree night you may have to assure them there is no obligation and if during that free night they feel you are not any good they can send you home early. Emphasize that you want to be aq benefit to them and wouldn't want to work for them if you wearn't. Also don't forget to tell them how much experience you already have. Some places are not familiar with restaurnat magic and don't think it can work! I hope this helped. |

Obviously you already have some restaurants courting you. Explain to them that EVERYONE does a kid's night on TUESDAY and that they are in direct competition with all the others. If they move their kid's night (or like I like to call it HELL Night) they will probably do much better as NO ONE else will be running against them for their business.
Talk to them about dollars and sense (yes I meant to write sense - think about it). Just my 2 drakma, Doug

Thanks for the tips so far. I've done everything that has been suggested in these tips short of actually telling the restaurants that they should change their kids nights night.
I guess I don't want to seem as if I'm trying to tell them how to run their businesses. I'll give it a try and do it very tactfully. Maybe after first compiling a list of all the places in the area that do kids nights on Tuesday already. |

You might try making a business arrangement with them that in exchage for working kids night exclusively at their restaraunt (Denny's and not the competition) you want to work a night free for them for the next few weeks in order to promote your business to adult clientle. They get a free night and you get a chance to show them it is worth their while. Then make sure the adults tell management how much they enjoyed your performance, etc. etc.
In short you build a need and then after the few weeks are done discontinue the free night. If they want you, they can hire you. I know this may be risky, but business is always a bit risky. Your alternative is to make sure you work evey table that doesn't have a kid at it. and try to build on it.
