This book is long out of print and can only be purchased second hand and usually at a pretty hefty price.

The book appeared in Hugard Magic Monthly over several years and you can buy the complete magazine for cheaper than you would get the book for from Lybrary.com in CD form
A great purchase as the magazine offers a lot more than just Martin Gardner's tricks
Magic is the art of emotionally sharing live impossible situations

There are so many terrific effects in that book that it is really difficult to pick out a favorite. - Markr

This book will be reprinted within the next few years. Don't buy it for 180$ + like you see on ebay.

The new edition will cost more than that. But at least it will have some additional material.
BTW, mine cost $75 on eBay two years ago. Save a search and wait for a good price. I waited a year for mine.

Curious. If this post was for Wilson's Complete Course, or Modern Coin Magic.. there would be tons of posts. Is that because its contents are more ideas or concept than developed tricks?
I'm still glad to hear it could be obtained as part of Hugard's Monthly - the publisher (of the reprint of the book) has been advertising their "special" edition of the book for about 2 years (I think the price was the only thing "special" about it), and still haven't announced the "regular" edition. Maybe they got the same response to it as this post has gotten!?

From my reading of booklets created by Martin Gardner he loved puzzles. I think a lot of us are discovering that puzzles do not have the same astonishment value as a good magic trick.
However I'm also waiting to find the Encyclopedia of Impromptu Magic (at a decent price) |

There's a nice section on tricks using your body, which are good impromptu when you have no props and you want to do some warm-up stuff. Also some interesting stunts with apples, if I recall. It's the kind of book that can make you 'the life of the party' if you can actually remember the 78 different tricks/puzzles/stunts that are possible with a matchstick, for instance.
