Yep, I guess you'll both have to be sad & cynical, and make up stories how other magicians are flogging and persecuting you. Oh, the drama!

There are many different perspectives on performing, but for the purposes of this argument, there are three: the folks perform infrequently or for their friends and family (personal enjoyment), the ones who perform more frequently but at their schedule (the semi-pros who have a full-time day job doing something other than performing) and the full-timers who perform to feed their families (to paraphrase Eugene Burger: "those who perform because it is Thursday").
All have different requirements from a review. Within the industry of magic, the enthusiasts, for the most part, rule the roost and therefore dictate the "product". Aussiemagic appears to be looking for some more angles that will address his perspective and, therefore, "feed his need". This is entirely valid. The truly sad part of this is when one a group with one perspective (say, the "major one") attacks a group with another perspective (say, a "minor one"). Rather than bringing everyone together and creating a stronger industry, one group drives the other away, fracturing the market and, occasionally, causing some individuals with a lot to add to the discussion to leave the sandbox. Respect the variety of opinions and try to leave the name-calling and generalizations to the children. Besides, those who resort to such techniques only reveal the shallowness of their character... So to sum up... . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . ... so's your mother! ;O) ajp |

I think a guy who's had 5 books of his magic published, created hundreds of tricks, performed at the Magic Castle, lectured and writes for TV is more than qualified to write reviews.
Now here's a few things you need to consider. An issue of Reel Magic runs around an hour 45 min. to two hours. His segment in one issue was 10 minutes. He covered 4 tricks. That's 2 1/2 mintues a trick. As a result, you're not going to get the same kind of detailed reviews that you would in Genii. Since time is limited, I personaly don't mind hearing about just the good stuff. I use several sources anyway before buying something. And let's face it, not all Reviewers agree on the same products. But, I understand why some people want to hear about the bad stuff. So, why not write a constructive note to David and make the suggestion. He's a really nice guy.

Or, better yet - submit your own reviews. Call it something like "It Stinketh on Ice." Would certainly get attention.

Grandpa! Thank you for your contribution! I don't really know why you are participating in this thread though...
Motown... I don't agree with you. Creating hundreds of tricks, publishing magic books, performing at the magic castle and writing for tv are impressive achievements but they don't necessarily qualify someone as a good reviewer. In fact, as edh pointed out, it can be detrimental because you also have products on the market that can be reviewed badly. So, you don't want to hurt anyone else's feelings... As sleightly pointed out, different people are looking for different things. In my case, I am looking for reviews that tell me whether the trick is something that would be practical for me in paid performances. And, I am not getting that from Mr. Regal's reviews. I don't want bad reviews! I want reviews on the practicality of effects so I can make an informed decision as to whether I think it would be a worthwhile purchase. I suspect that someone who is performing for a living would be better qualified to do such reviews. Other subsribers of the magazine may have other needs and if they are being met by Mr. Regal's reviews then that is great. In regards to the time limitation, sure I can understand that but I don't really think it makes that much of a difference. Wayne Kawamoto has limited time to do his reviews as well but I think he does an excellent job. Anyway, it is no big deal. But, I will say again that I am not looking for bad reviews just honest and practical ones. Telling me that something is "fantastic" is absolutely useless to me!

Aussie et al.:
If I may throw my unsolicited bit of drivel in here.....I hear where you're coming from....I hear: "You say everything is great, but you don't REALLY talk to the workers out there in your reviews." OK......I read you loud and clear. Let's see....it's sorta like this: I recently read "How To Think Like Leonard DaVinci" (I'd normally run from any book with that kind of title but it was a remarkable read indeed)....that was one amazing human being...he really was......just the volume of his output in one lifetime is breathtaking. Lot's of people thought (and still think...me being one of them) that old Lenny was a cool cat.....a brilliant cat. And, arguably, he has left enough of a footprint behind that people should think that. Guess what, if Leonard D. rose up from the grave tomorrow and started reviewing effects on "Reel Magic Episode ??"....people would say, "Yes! Leonardo is such a great magic reviewer." (oddly, there's reason to believe that he may've actually written a few tricks down, but I digress). The point I'm trying to make is that David Regal is such a magic-stud that people pretty much trust what he's saying. Frankly (and I don't know either way)...you may be grinding it out in the trenches a'lot more than he ever does (or will do)....but he's so creative and magically-wise that people (me included) value his opinion. Hope I helped say something that mattered! If I didn't, I guess it doesn't matter. My main reason for writing here is that I'm nearly finished with Episode 2 of Reel Magic and I think the whole mess is awesome! I can't quite figure out why people allow Andrew Mayne to call himself a magician.....but beside that.......it's all good!!!!
His face isn't really this long in-person!

This will be my 1000th! post:
I take the reviews and the entire Reel Magic Magazine for what it is to me, ENTERTAINMENT! And I think Simon Lovell should do the section of shame that Kozmo mentioned. That would be really funny. Or if they could get Bill Malone. Now that would be really really funny. ACE

About David Regal's reviews: watch April 2008 Reel Magic Magazine, he tells you all you need to know about "CRAP" magic!
He gets boxes and boxes of "CRAP", so he mostly only tries to show the good stuff. ACE
