Had a spooky night last night. All my life I have suffered from night terrors (I'm sure that most of you know what these are) and occasionally I think that there is some kind of higley type creature crawling over me, or some other strange being attacking me while I sleep. And of course because of this condition I still see it when I wake. Once I thought that there was this kind of spider/reptilian hybrid moving up my legs and attempting to attack me - I ended up jumping out of bed and literally kicking my door down to get out of the room, because I could still see it. They can be intense.
I haven't had one in about 18 months, and all has been good. But I just purchased a new home 3 months ago, and last night something strange happened here. I felt like I had been shoved and 'woke up' (or did I?) to see what can only be described as a shadow moving in the corner of the room. It jumped around a few times and then vanished. Then I was woken again by what seemed like a shove, and I opened my eyes and saw a male in his early 30's, standing next to my bed staring at me. I freaked the hell out. Literaly my heart was in my throat, and for the first time ever I started shaking. I closed my eyes for a bit, opened them again and he was gone. Again I was awoken by what seemed to be a shove, and I saw this same man crouched down in the corner of the room just staring at me. I nearly wet myself. Again I closed my eyes, opened them moments later and he was gone. Now I have NEVER had more than one of my night terrors in one night, and was extremely freaked out by this. Every time I have had one it has always been about some kind of creatue, bug etc. This guy was SO real though that it freaked me out. He was wearing casual clothes, seemed quite calm and was just staring blankly. I had been watching some TV show called Ghost Hunters before I went to bed, so I am assuming that perhaps this had triggered what I saw. But it was strange that it happened three times throughout the night, and that has never happened before. I'm curious, does anyone else suffer from these or have a similar story? I am onto my second bottle of red now because I'm a touch nervous about going to sleep. I have always been a bit of a sceptic when it comes to paranormal events because of these night terrors, but after last night I am having a hard time coming to grips with it. What if some of the **** I have seen in my life was real, but muddled because of these terrors? Just thought I'd share. Nearly bedtime. Luke |

This is not night terror, they're really hiding under your bed...

I also have night terrors now and then. For me they manifest as something scary happening in a dream (not necessarily something I would find frightening during waking hours) and the feeling of terror follows me into my waking state for a few minutes after. I generally yell out loud with escalating volume to force myself out of the dream, which scares my wife as well!
The irrational feeling of sheer terror upon awaking is pretty unpleasant. I guess I've been fortunate that I've never seen anything scary once I'm out of the dream. I believe that part of me knows that the fear was only created by the dream and then when I'm out of it I can control my response more easily. In your case Shield I'd say that the stress of moving into a new place coupled with Ghost Hunters caused your brain to conjour up the night terror....or more likely you've moved into a haunted house. Either way it is a cool story. |

If you haven't seen the 1970s TV-movie "Don't be afraid of the Dark" - go find it and watch it... you'll love it.

I have heard that putting a night light in your bedroom will help minimize the occurrence of night terrors.
You might also wish to "smudge" your house, especially since you just moved.

Harlequin - Mine are a pain in the ass. They are always while I am in my bed. I never have these where I am outside of it. I think that's what makes it all the more freaky.
Doc - I'll definitely check it out. Philemon - I've tried the night light, I still had them. And amazingly in my dream the night light is still on! The mind is amazing. I just thought it was an interesting story as I've had them where there is some kind of silouhetted figure I can't make out either moving through the room or standing by the bed. This one was different though, to ACTUALLY see a real person, dressed in casual clothes (wearing a hawaiian shirt of all things) who looked completely normal staring at me... I can't figure out how my head came up with that one. And I checked, my bedroom windows were closed - so it wasn't my neighbour Luke |

The reason the night light is still on is because (if it is a night terror) you are partially awake and seeing your actual room--you are not technically dreaming, but seeing a single dominant dream image superimposed onto your room. I sent you a PM with some info, and also recommended a night light, but perhaps you could experiment with a slightly stronger light source, i.e. cracking a door to a lit room? Lighting is generally the best cure, but I'm sure there are others. Best luck--they are harmless, but I'm sure it sucks to have them frequently!

I have a recurring dream where I'm apparating around the world, sitting on random people's chests...
Maybe you need a recurring dram? (*joke* - poor one at that; I beleive that alcohol worsens the frequency of these, if I recall correctly)

My sympathies, Luke. Your descriptions made ME nervous! I've only rarely had similar experiences - and not recently, thanks to the gods and goddesses!
Raven has the best idea. Your descriptions certainly evoked a bit of the feeling of the situation. I would expect that a bit more detail and description would create a wonderful story that could be of performance use! The biographies of some of the better horror writers hints that many of them were writing about the very things that terrified them in their own lives. The unnerving situation of that 'average person' just standing there, silently staring, is almost as bad as those terrifying insectoid 'things!' (Nearly everyone is freaked out by bugs; big ones would drive me mad!) Doc Steve is right; alcohol is NOT indicated. At it's worst, it increases such occurrences. Perhaps a very warm and friendly bedmate might help? Or some physician prescribed medication experimentation if it gets really bad. Or both. brane |

I used to have them, too, though not as often as you describe. Now I have them rarely. When I do, I can make them stop immediately by telling myself--within that dreamlike state--that I'm dreaming. Without fail, that wakes me up and out of the terrors.
You may have similar (or better) info from the PMs you have received, but just in case, Wikipedia as excellent articles on 2 of the 3 related issues (the 3rd is very brief, but the same info from the other two applies). Recommend you check Wiki on these topics: Hypnagogic Sleep: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnagogia Hypnopompic State: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypnopompic Sleep Paralysis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis |

You might want to check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dreaming. Another good resource is Stephen LaBerge - check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_LaBerge. He also has some great material on the subject. BTW, he is a Ph.D. (got his degree - in Psychophysiology - from Stanford University). Should you look into Lucid Dreaming - have fun. I've enjoyed it. sorry mate, but you and your missus look so peaceful when you're sleeping... I reckon it may be worth visualising the scenario before you go to bed, just for 5 minutes, and see yourself bright and vividly reacting to it in a positive/comical way... or, look into the paul mckenna sleep book - "I can make you sleep"...
