Hi
to SKIP WAY . you said in another post : I definitely prefer the side placement. I also use two screens decorated as books to give that extra little "oomph." How do you stage it ? any photo ? It seems that this second screens increase the effect, but I don't see how you present it. Interesting. |

Yes, the 2 screen method is best and is as designed by Jack Hughes.

Having the two screens helped take much of the heat off of the gimmick...one moved to each rear corner...but, it was still a momentary "ooh-ahh" followed by echoes of "Ohhhhhh, I get it!" It just stopped being worth the effort for the low impact. As usual - my personal opinion.

Years ago, I used three balloon swords instead of metal swords for the inital front supports. They would naturally give when the volunteer sat on the carpet. Made the little "bounce" seem natural.

Rather than swords, I use magic wands. Simply cut some wood to the size you need, paint them to look like wands and glue some magnets on the back.

My carpet doesn't sag at all when the kid sits on it, it's built to take a huge weight (also means it's a heavy ol' thing to carry about, and I should mention, awkward, quite bulky, and whilst carrying it, if you ever get your fingers caught in the mechanism - well - you could easily lose the finger!)
This carpet has more than one movement - it spins around the center point of the carpet, but also around the gimmick. This allows a much more fluid movement. My carpet was supplied by Tommy Cooper Magic in Blackpool. I've seen the "Princess" Flying Carpet, and must say, I think it's one of the worst bits of magic kit I've ever set eyes on! You simply can't compare the two, one is a proper professional illusion, the other, a VERY cheap and nasty rip-off. All else aside, the Princess carpet could potentially buckle under the weight of your helper, and things would get really messy. If you want to present this illusion, get a professional version. I buy stuff from the States all the time, and pay the import duties. So, you guys can get this from England.... Anyhoo, I just had some great photos from a client, so go here to see how cool the Flying Carpet looks with a Jeff Jones backdrop: http://www.pottythepirate.com/#/magic-island/4533882369 In my presentation, the pirates have been on a big adventure, and are stuck at the top of our enemy's castle. We see that the "tablecloth" looks more like a caaaaaaarpet.... and so we make it fly us back to our ship, and to safety. Potty |

Earl that is a great idea! I saw a similar thing with a chair suspension type levitation, except it was supported by 3 balloons and worked like the carpet. The entertainer pulled the slide back and popped the balloons.
Skip Way, sounds great! Thanks. Zach |

Kyle Peron once stated that this was one of Ed's off-the-wall comedic set-ups using an assistant dressed to look like an older woman. I've watched this video countless times...and if that's a made up stage assistant then my hat is off to the wardrobe mistress. If it's a joke, they certainly left the punch line on the editing room floor on this one.
Still, I could see this being done at a magic convention as a parody on the suspension. Hard for me to believe that someone of Ed's calibre would have done this otherwise. Would be interesting to know for sure. He and Brittany were in town this past weekend - could have asked him then!

Skip is correct. Ed set that up and was supposed to happen that way. If anyone knows Ed and his show, you know he does off the wall antics like this a lot. If you take stufflike that out of context to the larger show, it will not make any sense. Not saying it was right or wrong, but it wase set up as a gag.

I just got done building a magic carpet from scratch.
I wanted to improve some aspects of the illusion, and learned a lot in the process. my carpet rotates and has about 1 foot motion to either side, I think this helps give a more lively & floating look to the carpet. I also found a neat way to build the screen. I used 1/2 inch thick neoprene to build the 2 inner corners at the bottom, it looks just like the wood, but the corners are flexible when the screen is moved back. I have 2 big magic wands holding up the front, they have magnets to connect under the carpet, that all seems to work. the unit is pretty big over 2 feet tall but packs flat. using swords for a kids show seems like a problem. I had a small test performance for this and it went pretty well. the hoop worked better than expected, the gimick is offset so it works almost like a goose neck hoop move. |

I performed the flying carpet during an Arabian show I was doing one summer.
I had a problem that when you removed the legs you actually had a flying table top illusion, also putting the legs back was a slow anticlimax! I redesigned the stage with tables, including the flying carpet one, made from a v shaped base (two bits of ply connected with a hinge) and annother piece for the top, then a cloth on top. Before I did the flying carpet I broke down the other tables showing how they were made. It made sense that if you had to move your tent you would want things that packed down small. The Illusion had two tops so when the child was "flying" I took the base and the table top away just leaving the carpet floating. This for me was a more complete illusion and putting the table back together was much quicker. Colin

One issue is that the screens need to be as tall as possible but not bump up against the bottom of the carpet assembly. You also need the ability to smoothly remove the screens. With 1 screen and 2 panels you just grab either side of the screen and drag it back bottom first. With 3 panels I couldn't tilt the screen and drag it back, so it had to be shorter and ended up with less coverage in the back. Two screen took longer to get out of the way and might bump into each other. Two screens also have potential angle issues on initial display and during removal. Which one gets moved first? Why are all those screens down there? What's up with the screens? One screen that covers the width of the base comes right off cleanly. I do like the idea of one screen being tilted or casual while the other screen is in place, that is a benefit of the 2 screen approach. Another issue is that there is a lot of STUFF with this illusion. A screen or two, at least two swords or wands, a hoop, a baloon or hat for the kid, and a coverage blanket for setup. So to perform I talk about the illusion, then pull off the table cloth and drag the screen back. More talk and the child goes up, maybe holding a baloon, wearing a hat, etc. Then the wands come out of the front and they float around, followed by the hoop pass. To end you can replace the wands or maybe just throw the table cloth back on. I don't bother with the screen again. One thing I did with my screen is painted it black and brown, because it is not important. The base of the carpet and the carpet itself are red and sparkling blue with jewels so they come forward in the color palette. I also hinged the screen so that it can be very narrow when dragged back and put in place. One issue to decide is how far should the screen go back. Farther is more convincing from the front, but exposes more angle problems at the rear of the carpet. |

Hi,
thanks for this review, billappleton . After reflexion (and speak with Skip Away) , It seems that using this prop at the same level than the audiance (or even audiance higher than the prop) works perfect, but I wonder if it works on stage with people a little under (normal stages conditions)... I think that the gimmick can be seen. MAK have covered the up part of the gimmick with the same materiel than arounf the carpet, but it don't hide it a lot... Who here use this prop on classic stage , or large stage ? Any problem to hide the gimmick? I think that it can work with a certain distance , but for the first lines of audiance who are under... I have doubt. Maybe I'm wrong? |
