A family-less (by car accident) freind, just laid off, feeling alone in the world got a call a week ago from an unknown sister. Turns out to be true. It was a weird week for her. I hope it is a good thing for you.

That could be good or bad. A wonderful woman I know found her 'father' and he pestered her for money from that point on.

Haven't talked to him yet. There's kind of a lot of strangeness to the story. Not sure how much I could write and not have people think I was making it up.

Unless he just found out that Santa is his dad...

Jack Nicholson was raised to believe that his grandparents were his parents and his mother was his sister. He didn't learn the truth until a Time Magazine reporter did a story on him and dug up the truth (a few years after his mother and grandmother had passed away).

Did a google search for my full name once (middle initial) and found that I'm apparently an associate professor in a Southern California college!
What's weird is that when my father (the "sr" to my "jr") left my mother, he moved to Southern California! I have to wonder if he remarried and decided to have another "jr," one that he could actually raise! I haven't had the courage to actually phone up the professor and ask what HIS middle initial stands for! It would be really strange having a half brother with the same name as me!

It turned out I had a half brother (I never met him, died of drug abuse a couple years ago) and the difference between his name and my brother who died last year was one had 'Edwin' as a middle name and the other 'Edward'.

Thanks for the comments.
Here's the story in a nutshell, with some omissions. Backstory is that my dad has had issues ever since he was in the military. He did the kind of work you don't talk about and it bothered him a lot to have to do the things he has to deny having had to do. My mom kicked him out when I was two and they tried to patch it up when I was three, he left again when I was four. All I remember about him during that time was that he bought these soft air guns and tried to teach me how to clear a room, something about sauerkraut, and this bar we used to hitchhike to. About six years ago I tried to find him again with the help of a geneologist. We managed to find an ex-girlfriend of his and she said that he had suffered a mental breakdown a couple years before that. My dad used to fish with his best friend and he never packed life vests because there isn't anything about swimming that the Navy didn't teach him. Well the boat sank and the water was so cold that my dads arms were paralyzed and he had to watch his friend sink. After that he took to vanishing into the woods for months at a time. She gave the the number of a commune which was the last place he was known to have been. I called the number but it was disconnected. I only found out yesterday that he owned the commune and taught long term wilderness survival there. I also tried to call his dad but he was too far gone mentally to help. Since I had some experts trying to find him and nobody could, I just figured he had wandered into the woods to die. Then yesterday he called my grandma looking for me. She called my mom, and my mom called me. My mom called and talked to him and told me what he's been doing but I haven't talked to him yet. I guess he bought back his dads farm and goes down to South America to build water treatment facilities whenever he feels like it. That's the Cliffnotes version anyway.

Interesting. Would your dad be pushing 60ish? I ask that because what you described was pretty common with guys in the early 70's. Sounds like an interesting guy. I will say one thing, based on experience with fellows with that type of history, should they drink be aware, that is the time they most often have issues.

Yeah, he doesn't drink so that parts okay at least. He's going to call my house tomorrow.
Another interesting thing is that I met a guy a while back who had the same last name and similar circumstances. He was about three years younger than me and married to a woman with my mom's name. He was also in the Navy, like my dad. We wondered if we were brothers and decided maybe not but we'd have some scotch anyway.
