Does anyone have information on a new book called "Mystery School" by Eugene Burger and Jeff McBride? Is there a web link to read about it?

I would recommend reading the interview with Jeff, Eugene and Robert Neale about the book and the school itself. Its the June 03 issue of Magic. The interviewer is Todd Karr - the book's publisher. ~ Fredrick

You're welcome to believe as you wish, thimblerig, but the interview is in MAGIC (June 2003 issue).

The book will be shipping from the printers (hopefully) on July 3 to Murphy's and will then be available from your favorite dealer soon after that. It takes about 5 or 6 days to ship via freight from the printers. I have seen a few of the effects in the book and they are great. I think this will be an excellent book. I can't wait to get a copy.

Does anyone have any other info on this book? I clicked on the link within this thread, but it says "page can not be found".

I know the book can be had for a lot cheaper then the price listed on the web site, which tells me the book is not selling all that well!
I have heard little about the book, I know someone who has it and all he says, is Tis so K. Anyone own this book, have the WOW, this is great stuff? I have seen the book as low as 69.00. Just wondering.. Rest |

I fixed the link - they removed some spaces from the URL. Here it is again. I'm tempted to pick this up - I love the Miracle Factory books.

I ordered it yesterday, I'll let everyone know what I think. Altough, I'm a huge McBride fan, so I will be biased...

I scanned through it at the SAM Convention...
There are many pieces and thoughts by different performers such as Losander, Burger, Luna Shimada (Jeff's former lady) etc....mostly essays.. It is very thick...the book is very well constructed...Jeff was selling and signing them for $90.00....they didn't appear to be selling very many... I wanted to eat at a nice restaurant that night so I didn't buy it....I would have if I wasn't tired of the buffet lines at that particular time. Please do let us know Fdragon? |

I’ve been dipping into this book on and off for the past week or so. It’s a difficult publication to classify, as it does not neatly fall within an easily identifiable category. As one might expect, the production standards are excellent and the book is well designed, very good to look at and handle.
The ‘dipping in’ aspect has a lot to do with the subject matter and the way the material is put together. There are a number of well-written essays by well known people - many of whom who have also contributed routines and effects. There is other less interesting material that I tended to quickly skip over. There is an insightful comment from Bob Neale at the beginning of the book. He writes about his involvement in the Mystery School but avoids detailing the experience from a personal perspective, as it was something that happened ‘in the moment’ in what was clearly a unique environment. That was my overall feeling about the book. It provides a wonderful permanent record (or Year Book) of the Mystery School for those who attended, but you really needed to be there to appreciate and internalize the experience for yourself. Reading it provides some insight and there is much to think about, but overall it is a much more meaningful publication for those who were part of the school over the past decade. Those looking for a handbook of effects will be disappointed. The book is much about the personal quest for an inner experience in terms of magic and meaning as well as practical aspects such as staging and music. The price tag may be an issue for many, but I’m sure the book will sell well by virtue of the pedigree of the writers and those involved with the school. Those who perhaps thought of attending the school may also be keen to see what they missed. Overall, a specialist publication for those interested in what was one of the more interesting magical gatherings of the 1990s.

This book is not for everyone. I just started reading the book and from what I've read so far, this looks like it will be one of MY favorite books ... but that's just me. I was lucky enough to have attended the last Mystery School (not the reunion) and 2 of the 3 Phoenix Gatherings.
If you are the type of person who enjoys the writings of Bob Neale, Eugene Burger and discussions on the "Art" of magic, sharing a magickal experience, and taking your magic to the next level, you will probabaly love this book. If, on the otherhand, you only care about learning the latest moves or some new effects, then save your money. This book is like Mystery School itself ... it ain't for everyone. Oh.... If I hear the phrase "Takeing my magic to the next level" one more time... Gah! Sorry, I have seen most of the performers mentioned in connection with The Mystery School Book. Most are good, a couple are great. (Not the 2 you might immediately think of) And the rest are so so. I had 2 friends who attended the Mystery School. Both were rather disappointed. When they expressed their disappointment, they were roundly criticized and told that obviously they were not ready for the knowledge being imparted to them. When I asked them to describe the process to me, it sounded very much like a weeklong "retreat" I and about a dozen other members of the the company I worked for went on at the time. Lots of drum beating and getting in touch with our inner child... None of us ever quite figured out what this had to do with sales... I guess we were not ready to go to the next level.
The book is quite attractive however... It looks a LOT like The new Advanced Dungeons & Dragons books I bought for my daughter.
