Hey all... when you guys do restaurant or bar magic what effects do you find to work well for those situations??
I mean specific tricks or dvds you use from or more general things like cards, coins, sponges etc... I have done some bar magic and wanted to know what works for you. Ari |

The Magic Menu has lots of ideas for bar work with contributions from the best bar magicians around!
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

Jiggernaut by Mark Jennest fits great into any bar routine. It's on his DVD "Miracles While U Wait". It's basically a one cup routine using a jigger and olive to perform an impromtu sobriety test. Great climax. I use it a lot with great reactions from drinking adults.

I do a bar night every friday. I use several gambling demonstrations, a vodka trick (I take ten shots! - but not for real), Wild coins, and signed bill in lemon. Often times I'll toss in a new trick to spice things up.
I also perform cards across for the 2 hottest women there, because I make a big deal out of removing the cards from their rear pockets or on their seats with pure sleight of hand, as I wiggle my fingers and look pleased with myself. Please, this is a bar - don't try that in a good restaurant or anywhere else other than perhaps on your wife and her sister (lucky you if that works out well).

Having seen this subject before on The Café get your hands on The Magic of Matt Schulien and Fechter. Both are loaded with material, advice, etc. While I've never read his material, I'm told the booklets from Jim Ryan are also very good.

Don't forget Scotty York, J. C. Wagner and Randy Wakeman. All work bar magic and all have shared tricks and routines in books and video.

I'm all for Doc Eason's material. And some of Danial Garcia's material rocks for work at a bar!

Another vote here for Doc Eason: Get yourself over to his site and pick up his 3 DVD set.
It was these 3 DVDs that got me off my backside of a "hobby" magician and actually forming an act and going out and doing it! The deceptively laid back style and selection of VERY workable material is a must. They also contain some of Doc's words of wisdom which simply can't be argued with and everyone needs to know. Some new, some classics, some old tricks that you may dismiss as not worth doing, but you are clearly shown that they are solid workers when given the Doc treatment. Hell! Get it for Anniversary Waltz alone! (It's a trick that everyone needs to know!) Doc Eason is someone who is very easy to relate to as he himself doesn't like over-complex moves and slights just to look flash when they aren't really needed. He did wonders for me: Truly inspirational!

Ive been doing restaurant and bar magic for many years.
I'm booked every Saturday at a high end reception hall. I do often the bill switch with a thumb tip and the d'light. even a vanishing silk with the thumb tip. I do fast tricks that carry a big bang. |
