Do comedy clubs generally welcome comedy magicians, or do some discriminate against them for being 'prop comics'?
Or are comedy magicians discriminated against in comedy clubs for other reasons? Bato William

Last time I did a comedy club I told them.
I am a comedy magician. If I do a trick and you don't clap I am a comedian. If I tell a joke and you don't laugh, I am a Magician. I thought I would clear that up just in case. This is a nice opening line in a comedy club.

Back when I did comedy clubs the image was of many magician's doing stock lines rather than writing there own stuff. This was back in the 80's and 90's. Hopefully things have changed.

I don't know Paul Zenon usually uses his own lines. I'll ask him.

I contacted Paul Zenon and he said that that is a version of one of his lines. He also pointed out that "stock lines" often start out as original lines that have been stolen a few times and therefore have become "stock"...

The best lines are the ones you create yourself.

No magic George, That line I heard about 22 years ago before Paul was even thinking of doing an act. Most lines that are used today have been used for years.

I just read somewhere that Paul Zenon is celebrating 25 years as a pro this year and that he started doing magic in 1974 so I'm guessing that he was 'thinking about doing an act' as you put it more than 22 years ago.
And don't I seem to remember that Jimbo/Jimmy Carlo was a guest on Zenon's BBC1 guest show nearly twenty years ago? |

Sorry; that should have read 'kid's show' rather than 'guest show' at the end

"stock lines" often start out as original lines that have been stolen a few times and therefore have become "stock"... The problem with stock lines is they have to have come from somewhere (and someone) and that someone might still be around and using them. This is what the comedy club environment held in contempt. (possibly less so now as differentiation between main-stream and comedy club comedy has become very blurred) It's also worth noting that even some of the most original writer/performers from the comedy clubs have occasionally come out with a stock line or two themselves. Extend this to the world of jobbing acts, part-time pros, amateurs and hobbyists where the originality quotient doesn't compare well, in general, with that of the comedy club environment and very few come out totally blameless in this regard. Originality, though, is still a quality the comedy club environment looks for and to some extent still expects. As a slight aside... my contribution to the world of magician's stock lines ..... I wrote a bit for the 'Professor's Nightmare' rope trick back in 1988 and used it on my appearance on BBC1's TV show 'Opportunity Knocks' the same year. The write-up in 'Abra' magazine at the time reckoned that this gag would find it's way into may magicians' acts. Later that year at the UK's IBM convention 3 magicians actually told me that they were going to use, or already were using, this bit from my act in their own shows! Some years later Repro magazine published a rope trick that included the gag and the editor interrupted the effects explanation to say that this gag alone was worth the entire years subscription to the magazine. A year or so ago I bought a rope routine from a well know, clever and funny magician and it turned out that the entire routine was based on my gag. Being a patter magic act myself I don't get to see that many patter magicians perform but over the years about 75% of those I have seen that have performed the 'Professor's Nightmare' have used this gag. It has, in effect, become a 'stock line' or 'stock bit'. "..... a piece of rope the same size as my leg....." Neal
