Which is why I use the Brainwave deck.

Years ago (twenty to be exact) I was doing magic in a bar when the bar tender told me about a man who had showed him a card trick. He said that the man had spent five years in prison and during that time he had invented this trick. He worked on it every day for the full five years and had finally perfected it just before being released. The bar tender said it was the most incredible thing he had ever seen. He went on to describe the invisible deck. He then asked if I thought I could duplicate the trick? I told him that I didn't know. If it took the ex-con five years to develope this trick it would take me some time to figure out how it was done. Every time I visited the bar after that the bar tender would ask me how I was doing on the card trick? I would tell him that it was tough but I was making progress. I let this go on for six months. I then told him that I had figured it out and performed this miracle for him. He said it was exactly what the ex-con had done and that he was amazed that it only took me six months. After that, every time I went to the bar he would tell the story and make me show this amazing card trick to everyone there. Looking back I sometimes wonder if the joke was on him or me? Sure makes for a great story though.

That is a great testament to the power of presentation.
The ex-con presentation is SOOO strong it makes the ID that much stronger. Just think if the ex-con hadn't built it up with the background and everything, or if you had just said "yeah I can do it". Saying it takes 6months-5years just makes it that much more impossible an amazing. reminds me of a laymen friend who does "The Wizard" but explains that during HS he worked at a mental institution and that this guy was messed up but could always guess the card.... he was so serious about it, I think he is better at presentation than me without trying, because such a simple trick comes off SOOOO strong because of it. While I have seen another laymen make jokes about "the wizard" that will always get your card, and he does, but it never comes across as strong as this mental institution plot. |

The Café's Search function works well, but it turns up a lot of references to the Invisible Deck, and I haven't been able to find the tips you are referring to. I have trouble with the ID along these lines, too. Thanks. -- Hushai |

Great story Eldon. Your patience is admirable. I know a bunch of eager magic boys who would've instinctively whipped out their IDs and performed it the second it was mentioned. You made the effect 1,000 times stronger by waiting.

Blehr,
I regards to my previous post, that had you a little confussed... I think what the guy was telling me was that since he had one 1 of 52 cards, that it was somehow easier to have the card turned face up, since 51 of the 52 cards wouldn't be his. Note to self....I have quite showing this trick to people with exceptional math skills.

heh... the ID is a great tool for me, and I do want to toss in a tip. In FAO-Schwartz (the toy store) they now have a magic section. Among the tricks availiable, is their version of this deck, which I am not too fond of, but when you buy it, in the package there is a special hankerchief for "holding" the invisible deck. It is made in such a way that you can fold it, and make it sound, and appear as if there is an actual deck inside. I use that to introduce the invisible deck, and then, while the audience is "shuffling" it, I hide the real ID under the same hankerchief, and then use it to make it appear.
Seems to be worth the $22 they want, as for their ID version, it's holding up a shelf somewhere. |

Once in a while the other specs will say that me and the spec who named the card must have set up the trick before hand, which is a little frustrating until I instantly repeat the effect with one of them.
I also had a lady ask me if I would be able to tell her if her pregnant daughter was going to have a boy or a girl.

So did you tell her? It's 50-50 chance. Or better if you know something about the parents?

I didn't try to guess but I thought about it afterwards and I should of because like you said its 50/50 and if I was right then that would make me that much more memorable.

An unfailingly correct answer would be "probably."
