Hey Folks,
I am looking for a needle through arm and I need some help knowing whom makes the good ones. I know that Viking has a good one and thought they had the right to the prop. I saw that Harry Anderson just came out with a new version, but I thought the version with his mane was not legit to the owner of the effect. I searched the archives and that didn't help. Can any of you help me know which is the best and which is not a rip off. Thanks Phil

I have always used Harry Anderson's original. It is good quality and will last for years. The only thing I can see different is the video that comes with it. The needle is supposed to be a better twist off bulb but the original is perfect and I don't think needs improving. You can't go wrong with Harry Anderson's version and I doubt it is a rip off.

I used the original "You Do Voodo" from Vikings Magic, it got bogger Bulb and Leak Proof construction that is far more superior than the imitation
But I also Buy the imitation and I used that in my Rehearsal and Abuse it in and out of my performance, but in front of my Client I use the Original if my memory still serve me well, it is NOT Harry Anderson who created this effect, it is Bruce Spangler and he created this to promote a release of a Movie with a Voodo Theme in it bu then again, Im not a Magic Historian My point is, it is a matter of Pride by using the Original and Learn to know how the creator think and Handle about his/her own Creation, and also the Original "You Do Voodo" is not that expensive (For me as a Wroking Pro), for a Hobyyist its a different Story (You Know Who you are) .....

I have the "Harry Anderson" setup that came in the cardboard box with no tape or dvd (I bought it about 15 years ago) and it still works. The bulb has never leaked, but I do take really good care of it. I keep the needle well oiled between uses and it has no rust spots on it. I'd recommend it!

When someone talks about the "Harry Anderson/Sun Magic Needle Thru Arm", there were 2 versions made. One had a friction fit bulb, the other had a little threaded piece that would screw the bulb to the needle. That one occasionally had the problem that the glycerine in some blood mixtures would do away with the adhesive that held it together. Conversely, the friction fit bulb could pop off if you had to squeeze it too hard because your blood mix was too thick. Steve Spangler's "You-Doo-Voo-Doo" is still the best, and Viking has the rights to it, and that's what they're manufacturing/selling now. You pay a little extra, but it's worth it.
Pomeroy Magic made a pretty good needle at one time, too. Steve |

If like me you are looking for something that is great for close up...check out Stat Needle thru arm. It's a mini version and comes with two gimmicked needles as well as two non-gimmiicked needles...plus the "gimmick" is in sterle type packages that allow you to put it on in front of the audience.... They also offer a rollerball applicator that at first I wasn't too sure about...but after using it for a while I can say I LOVE it! It sells as an extra but I'm glad I bought one.
FYI..The Stat mini needle kit isn't CHEAP...but for what's included I think it's priced about right. I also have Harry's needle and I LOVE it as well but only doing close up now the mini needle really works better for me. I acutally can carry it in my SHIRT pocket...although they do supply a small first aid pouch with it. Good luck! Bobbyk |
